I think there is only one reason to pick one state over the other. % of your income given to the state. Nobrainer on that one.
1. yes, TX has no income tax and I would rather pay 1.74% on a $200K livable house in a decent neighborhood than .8% on a $200K dump.
2. Most of the degrees in CA are LGBT studies or some other nonsense that renders one unemployable.
3. lots of gov’t assistance to pass in CA
4. That’s a good thing? In CA both parents have to work because the cost of living is so high and a lot of it is subsidised bt gov’t.

Let’s see. My 4-2-2 (2800 sq ft) in Texas is evaluated at $135,000. In California it would cost at least three times that. So . .
$135,000x1.74% = $2349 (which is more than I am paying, but. . .)
$135.000x3x0.08% = $3240.
Yup, I am paying *so* much more in property tax living in Texas than I would in California. Now throw in that income tax I am not paying . . .

I had a friend buy a house in Antioch and they paid 2% to build new schools. After 10 years, still payng and still no new schools.
1) California has lower property tax rates.
Totally offset by no income tax in Texas
2) College graduation rates there are impressive.
In Gender Studies and Minority Grievance Exploitation Studies.
3) Students get better SAT scores (though slightly fewer take them).
OK.
4)The state is above average in terms of children enrolled in day care.
Texas moms take care of their own kids.
5) If you’re a Californian, you’re less likely to die.
The effective rate is 100% in both places.

I’m 300#, I’m a Californian. (I’d rather be a Texan!)

SAT scores have not really inflated. It used to be two parts — verbal and math. What happened is that a third part was added (essay I believe). That score has the same weighting as the other two, and is added in.
To compare today’s scores to “back in the day” (like when you and I took them), multiply the current values by 2/3rds.
(I think you will find they have dropped when you do that.)

Except that their much higher property values just about compensate for the lower rates. Plus, we have no income tax in Texas...California doesn’t hold a candle there.

Texas colleges have a policy of letting in lots of marginally-qualified students and giving them a chance. Mainly fail out, but they are given a chance. California is too poor to have that policy...they have to be more selective.

The picture gives it away. California has a huge percentage of Asians, and that tips things over. Plus, from above, lots more Texans try college, including people that are marginally-qualified.

True, in Texas the cost of living is much less (beyond housing, owning a car is much, much, cheaper)...so lots more people like my wife can stay home and raise our kids.

As if that matters to people that live there. I guess I can say that California is closer to China, whose carbon emissions have SKYROCKETED. Also, why are their emissions so low? Because they drove out nearly all heavy industries.

California also wins here - not only more parks, but nicer ones. The scenery in California is legendary. But the parks do get crowded, very crowded.

Perhaps because CA has driven out all of its "smokestack" industries. For example, there are now zero major auto plants in CA.

No income taxes in Texas to offset that, however, Kali has a 10% income tax rate. So, for taxes, Texas wins, Kali sucks big time.
In California most of my guns (the ones I lost in the boat accident) would be illegal. Texas wins.

Not to mention Texas has no state income tax, and the taxes characterized as fees are absurdly high and pervasive in CA.
Plus Texas has a balanced budget and it a net contributor to the federal government (which I resent as a Texan having to pay for the failed social engineering in leftists states).
Oh yea lets not forget individual liberty to raise our kids as we see fit, and the gun rights that exist in Texas.
I could go on forever.
