I guess I’m not a purist. I consider them still at their peak during the Black Album days. “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven”, “Nothing Else Matters”, “Wherever I May Roam”, and “Sad but True”, are among my favorites.
Still I have to say the highlight of the best show I saw (in the Boston Garden [I don’t even know what they call it now; the name has changed a couple of times iirc]) was One. The whole place got pitch dark, & the sound of a helicopter filled the air. It was eerie & powerful. I’ll never forget it.
Same here. I was familiar with Metallica before the Black Album, but they never pushed my buttons before that disk. In my opinion, it was the pinnacle of their career.
