I’ve always been with the Shakespeare crowd, but Wiki mentions a “disreputable” Philadelphia lawyer named Schuster in 1843. Given the Germanic influences in Philly (a German language newspaper was the first to publish the Declaration of Independence), I wouldn’t be surprised with the intentional blending of scheiss and Schuster.

Just seems that a Shakespeare origin would have put it in common use long before it actually showed up.
