Photographing a Color Run Will Destroy Your Camera Gear–Don’t Do It

If there hasn’t been a Color Run 5k or 10k race near you, there probably will be soon. And with all that color, you certainly want to take some pictures, right? Not with your camera you don’t.

I’m never one to worry much about lens dust, but the color bombs they throw out at Color Runs are different. In the last month my lens rental business has had over 20 lenses and several cameras nearly ruined by these things. For what it’s worth, all of the renters tell us they really weren’t near any of the major ‘color bombs.’

What's a DSLR? Some kind of camera? :) I've got a Rollei Twin Lens Reflex that shoots 35mm and 2 1/4 X 2 1/4. Don't have the 8x10 adapter or underwater case.

During the LBJ inauguration the SS tried to knock it out of my hand as I snapped a picture of the presidential limo in the motorcade. Later on, when things slowed down, as governors passed by I'd get to talk with them and get a wave as I took their picture. Great fun for a junior high kid.

Does anyone make a half frame 35mm anymore? Always wanted one of the Leica viewfinders.

I guess that would be one way to go. Once in a while gig-landing me couldn’t justify something like that.

Here is an example of what I went and found on the course a few blocks up from the finish line that made a few bucks. I visited the site a few times. There was a good perch across the street that put me level with the activity. The 70-300 lens did well.

I’ve worked a few of them as an event photographer here in SC. After a 8 - 10 hour day I felt like I had been through it.

‘What is the substance that it can be considered completely safe when it’s in your lungs?’

Oxygen?

If it does that to a camera lens, just guess what it does to your lungs.

If it can get behind the glass lens of a camera, that bandito mask isn’t going to keep small (cancerous?) particles from being inhaled. Better have goggles on too and not sunglasses...

The Color Run™ explosions are basically food grade cornstarch and are 100% natural and SAFE.

Is cornstarch anything like flour when it comes to being flamable if the powder is floating in the air?

I ran in a color run last year and it seemed like innocent fun. Now I come here and find out that it was both gay and liberal. Boy my parents are going to be heartbroken when I tell them what I’ve done.

Speaking of colors, I just realized today (when I saw it in a mirror!) that brown spelled backwards is nword

Not necessarily, I mostly shoot (and process and print) 35mm black and white film.

I know Roger - not up close and personal, but I’ve done some business with Lensrentals.com. He’s a good person, and he’s doing this to protect his business.

The powder used in these color runs is very fine and can get into everything, even on weather-sealed lenses apparently.

I appreciate the warning, since these color runs are one of the latest “fads” in the running community.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a $1500 lens!

Ha, Ha. With a smile. What is the colored substance that sticks to your clothes and covers your clothes and has the people who throw it wearing masks, that is safe for your lungs?
