WHen I was 7 years old, living out in the sticks, we had no starling pest problem. My father was a bush pilot (prop engine) and had no problem with starlings - he was ‘concerned’ about ducks, geese etc. Hawks may have kept the small bird population down or under control but I might have though ravens/black birds or whatever big cawing birds they were that covered the trees could be classified as pests.Lastly, we had no idea what species it was to begin with. His name was “Hot Lips” because he was all beak and big eyes but no feathers or hint of what he would grow to be. No regrets there.

Baby bird has flew da coop!!

Yesterday morning, I looked in and he was snug as a bug in the rug. His parents were around and making that harsh sound they make.

Later in the afternoon, he wasn’t in the birdhouse anymore!
I didn’t see him.
But his parents were farther back in my yard on the fence, and I heard the very high-pitched chirp of the baby - so I walked over and the parents made the harsh sound (which I now interpret as a warning) and the baby shut up - he’s over the fence in a wooded area, so I couldn’t see him.

But the parents hung around all day and from time to time I would hear him.
I can only assume that all is well. Thanks to all FReepers with their tips and recommendations!

“Miles, you’ve gone too liberal.”

Hehee! Don’t worry; I haven’t flipped. I just want to make sure that folks are fully informed that there are laws regarding taking in wild animals. Heck, I nursed a cardinal back to health in my youth. The problem these days is that someone starts talking, word spreads, and the next thing you know there’s a state wildlife deputy knocking at the door.
