Computer Question: Image/Graphic Conversion and Email Blackout in Webpage
5/13/13 | Me

Posted on 05/13/2013 7:30:23 PM PDT by ducttape45

I got two computer questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

First, in my work I regularly have to convert JPEG images from 60" x 45" at 72 DPI to 5" x 3.75" at 300DPI. I normally do this through Photoshop. However, the amount of the photos my coworkers have increased from say, 20-30 to over 800-900 at any one given time.

I'm trying to find a faster method of converting them. I've looked for software to do it en-mass but I really don't know where to look or what to look for. That's one.

Second, I downloaded a webpage template to help me in constructing a website of my own. But the bugger went and did something that blanks out my email address. No matter where I put it in the webpage, it's always blanked out, though the mouse, if it rests over the spot it should be, can be clicked to access it. Weird, and maddening.

I'm hoping someone has a simple way to address this one. It's an older template and the company no longer is in business (that I'm aware of) and was/is British so I can't pay anyone to send me a code to fix it.

Thanks for any help anyone can lend me.

You can do batch conversion in Photoshop

I use Lightroom now for all of that.

My workflow has decreased by at least 80%

Look up ImageMagick - a command line driven image conversion tool. You should be able to set up a script/batch job to do bulk groups of pictures.

On the Webpage issue....you might consider using Wordpress.

It is very powerful and there are a ton of templates out there.

I use StudioPress for my templates on the Genesis Framework

One of the best pieces of software is called Photomechanic. It will automatically convert, rename, resize and do other things to jpegs. Unfortunately, it is expensive at $150.00.

It is focused on the needs of photojournalists, but it does a great job.

Use actions in Pshop.

Its like a macro. You can record an action adn repeat it in batch.

I’d write a program to do the image conversions myself, but that doesn’t help you much - and I’m not sure of any other applications that would do that for you.

As for the email disappearing bit - check the styles being applied. My guess is you have it configured to draw a hyperlink using the same color as your background. There are multiple colors (hover, active, click, normal) that can be applied to URLs, and your email address probably counts as a URL.

There’s an old DOS program that could do things like that REALLY quick, PictView (IIRC).

Yep, ImageMagick is The Tool for mass image manipulation.

I converted 85,000 images with it in one evening. Started the Mogrify command and came back in the morning and the task was finished. Flawless. BUT, NEVER operate on the original copy of the image. ALWAYS have a backup file.

THE BEST TOOL for batch conversion.

Used it for years while I ran the catalog department for a large privately held wholesale distributor. Created both print and web image for them. And created a 3000+ page catalog and more large promotions than you can imagine.

Database publishing.

Batch processing using the ‘Actions’ palette in Photoshop? Or do you use Adobe Bridge from Photoshop?

Download Image Magick and you will never be sorry.

Purely Command line, available in Linux and Windows ports.

Incredibly fast and efficient.

If you need help setting up the batch process scripts, I can tutor you a bit. Not hard, but requires a little testing.

NEVER OPERATE on Master Images. Always make copy and then test conversion on small batch until script is debugged. Once you get the conversion script worked out, it is a piece of cake to maintain the files.

The most incredible free software there is.

I used a lot of open source software for database publishing operation.

Will be happy to discuss this with you if you like.

I use the free Irfanview program. On the Batch Conversion menu, just below the output choice, check the “Advanced Options” selection and make your choices. It will allow a change of the DPI also.

Get a copy of FormatFactory (it’s free).
It will batch convert from any audio, video or picture format to any other needed format, and it’s fast.
If you click the multi-thread check box, it will put every core and all the memory on your machine into 100% mode and work even faster.

You can do it in Photoshop...

Give a serious look at Lightroom 4

it will change your workflow in a good way.

If they are same sizes and you want to reduce to same smaller sizes, Irfanview (freeware) has a batch mode.

Hi,

I do mass conversions with Photoshop regularly. I have written scripts in several formats to facilitate this. My Javascript versions should work for you regardless of platform. Send me an email at blue@sevenarts.com if you’d like me to work up a test for you and I’ll do it tomorrow at work. We can start simple to see if we’re on the right track and evolve the process from there.

I might be able to help you with the html issues as well. I’m about to fall asleep, though, so I’ll look at your description of that tomorrow too.

-Scott
