Mount Everest's Ice Is Melting (We're Doomed UpDate!)

Earth's global thaw has reached Mount Everest, the world's tallest peak, researchers said today (May 14) at the Meeting of the Americas in Cancun, Mexico.

Glaciers in the Mount Everest region have shrunk by 13 percent in the last 50 years and the snowline has shifted upward by 590 feet (180 meters), Sudeep Thakuri, a graduate student at the University of Milan in Italy, said in a statement. Located in the Himalaya Mountains on the border between China and Nepal, Everest's summit is 29,029 feet (8,848 m) above sea level.

Thakuri and his colleagues tracked changes to glaciers, temperatures and precipitation at Everest and the surrounding Sagarmatha National Park. There, glaciers have retreated an average of 1,300 feet (400 m) since 1962, the team found. More recently, precipitation (both snow and rain) has dropped by 3.9 inches (100 millimeters) and temperatures have risen 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.6 degrees Celsius) since 1992.

The researchers suspect that the glacial melting in the Everest region is due to global warming, but they have not yet established a firm connection between the mountains' changes and climate change, Thakuri said in the statement.

So you mean to tell me it is getting warmer worldwide?
I can beleive this, the paper is saying the temperature is going to increase on average 20 degrees in the next two months.

So all the frozen climbers who never made it back down will thaw out now?

This is one of the coldest springs on record and world temperatures have dropped 3C this year alone, OH wait this meltdown is a 50 year trend in an interglacial warming period!

Never Mind.

Where are the sea level changes that would have ensued?

People who climb Everest can best be described by one word: stupid.
It’s been done, nothing to see there but the death and trash left by previous climbers.
Strive to achieve something important, see that democRATS are removed from office.
Now that’s productive!

Is Greenland green?

Actually, I remember reading an article a couple of years back about a guy in Greenland who was buying up land and starting to farm it. The average temperature, apparently, was only a degree or two warmer than previously, but that was enough to make the land produce.

Which is a good thing. I think I read in about the same period another article about old Viking farmsteads being uncovered that had been covered over as the ice had advanced back in the 1300-1400s. Which suggests that whatever warming there is, just gets us back to what it was prior to the 1400s.

For me, whatever warming there is, is a natural phenomenon, and is a blessing.

There may yet be hope for George Mallory.

Quite a (potential) "Rip van Winkle" story there if he thaws out and wakes up...

From this article:"Everest's summit is 29,029 feet (8,848 m) above sea level."

From Wikipedia: "The elevation of 8,848 m (29,029 ft) was first determined by an Indian survey in 1955

Based on a 58 year difference between these two statements of elevation, when exactly did the sea level start rising and how much has it risen?

I believe what the snow and ice are doing is called sublimation. Kind of like what’s happening on Kilimanjaro. See below:

Snow and ice sublime, although more slowly, below the melting point temperature.[1] This allows a wet cloth to be hung outdoors in freezing weather and retrieved later in a dry state. In freeze-drying, the material to be dehydrated is frozen and its water is allowed to sublime under reduced pressure or vacuum. The loss of snow from a snowfield during a cold spell is often caused by sunshine acting directly on the upper layers of the snow. Ablation is a process that includes sublimation and erosive wear of glacier ice.

Nothing magic here. Are the mountains sinking instead of the sea rising? Mysterious eh?
