I already lost one battle with the “Windows Backup’ virus so I decided to be safe. Is there any safe OS, not for long. I got a trojan every day and now I don't. I got lousy vista and windows 8 and am learning to work around them.

Is there any safe OS, not for long. No, but there are safer OSes than windows. I don't use any anti-virus, anti-trojan, anti-anything. I haven't since 2003. I've never got a virus/torjan/malware since then.
I don't have to "learn to work around" my OS. It works the way I do. YMMV, of course.
