Word For The Day, Thursday, May 16, 2013 – requite
dictionaries ad nauseam | 16 May 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

requite\rih-KWYTE\ verb
1. to make return for : repay
2. to make retaliation for : avenge
3. to make suitable return to for a benefit or service or for an injury

Example sentences:
Beautiful but malevolent, Maude requited Sydney's love with scorn and treachery.

"Odds are that O’Brien's flare-up of romantic love for Amanda won't be requited."
— From a movie review by John Wirt in The Advocate (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), November 16, 2012

Etymology:
You might be familiar with the phrase "unrequited love." Love that has not been requited is love that has not been returned or paid back in kind, which brings us to the common denominator in the above definitions for "requite"—the idea of repayment, recompense, or retribution. The "quite" in "requite" is a now obsolete English verb meaning "to set free, discharge, or repay." ("Quite" is also related to the English verb "quit," the oldest meanings of which include "to pay up" and "to set free.") "Quiten," the Middle English source of "quite," can be traced back through Anglo-French to Latin "quietus" ("quiet" or "at rest"), a word which is also an ancestor of the English word "quiet."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

That woman is stupid times two. First she dates a loser(I’m guessing here) and then she allows photographic evidence to be produced to incriminate herself. A+ for you.

Misty and 68 in the woods, but it is going to get well into the 80’s, so I put new filters in the AC system and turned it on...

Obama owning the IRS
Should not surprise anyone-
For both Nixon and Clinton
That was part of their fun

An audit here, a fine there
The public trashing of a name-
No wonder so many are so hot
To requite Obama with the same

And as for spying on the press,
They woke up, and made a scene-
So, since Obama is playing Nixon
Who gets cast as Haldeman or Dean?

That is dumb-why broadcast your lapse of reason in public when there are sooo many covert ways to get the point across-ways that won’t get you fined/sued for malicious mischief...

How is the puppy doing today? And out of curiosity, what do your other pets think of his neckwear?

Like I said, dumb-airing dirty laundry that way, like some silly reality show diva-she should have asked a woman like me, experienced in the art of subtle and effective revenge. That public spray paint tantrum shows no class whatsoever...

A+ for you! We have been holding out on turning on the AC and just using fans at night. The spouse’s allergies are driving him crazy. Bush honeysuckle is done blooming but blackberries are flowering now and cottonwood is blowing like crazy. Little dog is more like himself every day. I’m still carrying him up and down the stairs but he has bolted and done them on his own. Big dog seems to need more attention lately but he’s not bothering Oliver. The cat, as usual, is aloof to all of it.

Buffy the Dandelion Slayer had one bad day on Tuesday. She is settling in and ruling the house already. No kennel over night last night. DH put her doggie bed outside our bedroom door where she was on guard all night. He put one of her training pads next to it and she used it. She escorted me to the bathroom when I got up. Otherwise, she was silent and slept. Good dog. She is getting playful. She ran in circles last night around the coffee table leaping over a throw pillow on the floor as she did. Her ears were flowing back and she put on the speed. I laughed myself silly. She is rejecting my lap to lay on the floor at my feet. She only wanted my lap on Tuesday. She will go eat when she’s hungry, even without me standing there to keep her company. All in all, she is taking over. I think that means she is adjusting.

Thank you!

Your cat is doing what cats do best-watch in plain sight while feigning indifference...

I’ve been just using fans here, but when the days are up to near 90, with humidity as high as it is now, then I bow to the weather and turn on the AC. I keep it at 80-82 anyway-I’ve always heard it is better for your immune system health to keep the inside and outside temperatures as close as you can and be comfortable-I also keep the furnace at 60-63 in the winter.

She’s not adjusting-she’s taking over, like pets are supposed to-she sounds like a charmer.
