The Germans also have a salient of their own, north of Kursk, around Orel. There is sure to be some action there, too. And there is also that southern balcony in the German lines along the Donetz and Mius from Kharkov to Taganrog.
The Rasputitsa is over and the ground has dried. At this time last year the two armies were pounding each other at Kharkov. Nothing this year; “all quiet on the eastern front.” Given the meandering shape of the front, there are a lot of opportunities for both sides to make a move, but they are just sitting. I wonder what they are waiting for...
What are they waiting for all? Simple answer: Hitler was waiting for all his new Tiger and Panther tanks to come off the assembly line to throw them into battle in his summer offensive, Operation Citadel.
Problem was the new tanks were so enormous and complex, the Germans were never able to mass produce in the quantities they needed. The delays also offered the Soviets more than enough time to build up their forces and prepare many layers of anti-tank defensive belts to slow down the panzers.
