Intel Can Enable a Successful $200 PC in the Age of the Media Tablet – Analysts.

Can PC makers produce ultrathin, touch-screen PCs that are appealing to consumers – and that are priced at just $200? Theoretically, yes, if microprocessor giant Intel Corp. is willing to cut the price of its semiconductor components to PC makers, according to an analysis from IHS.

“A price point that low seems far-fetched considering the mobile PC prices of today, with ultrabooks and other ultrathins going as high as $1,000 or more. However, the small laptops known as netbooks saw their prices reach down into the $200 range at the height of their popularity a few years ago, and a cost analysis of netbooks shows how such a low level of pricing can be used to support a no-frills type of ultrathin PC,” said Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for compute platforms at IHS.

The cost estimate for a standard netbook, an Intel Atom-based PC in clamshell form-factor, based on estimates from IHS for Q3 2013 timeline, comes out to $207.82.

“Hitting this kind of price point is not impossible for the PC industry, already a cutthroat market accustomed to razor-thin margins. Such a possibility was stated by outgoing Intel CEO Paul Otellini, who during Intel’s first-quarter earnings call in April made the bold prediction that touch-enabled, ultrathin Intel-based notebooks using non-core processors could be available by the end of this year,” said Mr. Stice.

OK i will be clear, if there was any camp stuff, i will be the one in the green.

However if were taking about x86 arch tablets or portable devices @ ~200 USD

then folks at AMD camp and intel camp must realize that the only person that can achieve this is AMD period.

WHY ???

PPL intel CPU are always high priced, you want find a intel CPU to build with without costing you 100$ and upwards which is the half of the BOM (Bill of material).

Look at the surface, looks at samsung windows 8 tablets its all ~400 USD, i also doubt that AMD can make ~200 tablets maybe ~300.

I will never own anything again that contains an AMD chip. I am very dissapointed in their support for the open-source communitity. Same with NVIDIA and Broadcom.

I am running various Linux distros on my stuff although my laptop (Trinity ) is windows 7.

But I barely use it.

I don’t think they have enough resources to even do as much as they once did for Linux and other open source.

As I said. They are on my don't buy/don't spec list. I'm done with them. I've got an A4-3400 in a machine that I regret ever buying. I won't do that again. There are other manufacturers that are more responsive to the open-source community.

Just curious ... what opensource issues have you run into with AMD and nVidia? Are they driver issues with Linux or something a bit more complex :-) ?

Hard to build a driver when you can't get information from the manufacturer. Easier to work with manufacturers that provide information.
