Everyone knows that Americans don't exactly agree on pronunciations. Regional accents are a major part of what makes American English so interesting as a dialect. Joshua Katz, a Ph. D student in statistics at North Carolina State University, just published a group of awesome visualizations of Professor Bert Voux's linguistic survey that looked at how Americans pronounce words. (via) detsl on /r/Linguistics His results were first published on Abstract, the N.C. State research blog.

Hey y’all, they ain’t no “r” at the end of the word “idea”. My MIL drives me up the wall with that one.

One of my favorite Christmas-time jokes, but I’ve learned that non-Texans often don’t get it:

Why did the three wise men have ashes in their beards?

They had just come from afar.

:-)

I pronounce Mary, merry, and marry the same..as do most people from Colorado.

I have noticed that a lot of people from back east have an ‘idear’ as opposed to an idea. I’ve heard it from well-educated Easterners...people who made fun of George Bush’s ‘nucular’...

In the list of second person plurals they forgot Pittsburgh: Yinz; and Upstate New York and parts NE: Youz and Yooz Guyz. Not to be confused with Yoots (young folk).

How’s ‘bout worsh - as in worshcloth, Worshin’ton, etc. Although, my mama always did reprimand me, saying there is no “r” in wash, as she made me spell it!

No "yiz" or "yinz" either.

Also they left out grinders, po' boys and torpedos for the "Italian sandwiches."

And tonic, lemonade, cocola, and fizzy drink for carbonated beverage.

And does the rest of the country really call sneakers "tennis shoes"?

They had just come from afar.

That reminds me of an old episode of the game show Password. Tom Selleck was the celebrity guest and the word he had to try to convey by hints to his partner - a Southern black woman - was "friend". Selleck gave the hint "Foe". The woman replied "Fahv". Selleck near burst a gut laughing.

Yes, we do - well, actually tennie shoes - and we’re wonderin’ why y’all have to be so sneaky?
