Vanity / Poll: Changing Free Republic Handle
6/3/13 | self

Posted on 06/05/2013 7:46:10 PM PDT by NowApproachingMidnight

This topic comes up occassionally, but now is as good a time as any to bring it up again.

I often wonder whether changing your handle on FR matters. I believe in the current environment that changing your handle is about as safe, sound, and secure as changing your password in certain instances.

I also know how well changing a username corrupts the database both for boon and bane.

WOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR USER NAME?

changed it years ago. So when I crow that I am from the class of 98 everyone ignores me because ones join date does not coorespond with ones new name.

I did. For the first few months here, I was “will1776”. When JR changed my handle, I kept my sign up date.

I used to be AHawkish76er, but after losing access to my email account was forced to change it. I have done nothing that I am ashamed of. I just realize more than ever how you are tracked. I realize how to muck that tracking. Changing your password does not muck tracking. It’d be analagous to an animal you were tracking changing noses. Doesn’t matter. On the other hand, I agree a reputation is important, albeit somewhat subjective as to value.

What if you put your handle name history in your profile? This would be uncrawlable by most bots/spiders, or at least unindexable in some cases.

I remember when a FReeper discovered Kristin, who don't remember, one of the best finds we have had. Attended many FReeps that he and the DC Chapter organized in DC, good guy.

Goonies (1985)

Chunk: Everything. OK! I’ll talk! In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max’s toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog... When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I got nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out... But the worst thing I ever done - I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa - and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.

It shouldn’t be !
