Boy, 6, carrying Burger King bag mauled by pit bull in Queens

A pit bull mauled a 6-year-old boy who was carrying a fast food meal as he walked along a quiet street in Queens Monday, police sources and witnesses said. The helpless boy was holding a bag with two Burger King kids meals inside as he walked near the corner of 140th Ave. and 156th St. in Rochdale about 5:30 p.m.

The crazed canine suddenly broke free from its owner and attacked the boy, sources and witnesses said. The pit bull’s teeth tore into the child’s leg, and the beast wouldn’t let go. “The little boy could not stop screaming,” said Dawn Johnson, 44, who watched out of her living room window as the horrific scene unfolded.

As a friend of the boy tried in vain beat the dog off of the victim, the pit bull’s owner laid on top of the dog to shield it from the friend’s blows, witnesses said.

Throw poisoned meat over the fence. That’s what a group of neighbors did when the cops told them they couldn’t do much about the pit bulls who were running loose and terrorizing the neighborhood. The cops said a dog had to bite someone first before they could do anything about it, so the neighbors did something about it.

I would have either shot the dog in the head at very close range, or found a bat or steel bar and caved its skull in to save the child. And would have done the same if it was my dog.

The latter part of your statement seems plausible if a steel bar were to be available (unlikely, though). The former makes no sense, though. Didn't you read where this was? It's New York City. Your chances of having a gun are almost nil.

I did read where it was...and have visited there myself several times. The last time I drove in there I did not see and was not stopped at any check point that searched my car or my person.

IMHO, despite their “ordinances,” a person would be crazy not to go in there capable of protecting themselves.

Normally, I would never reveal what I had with me unless I absolutely needed it. Seeing a little boy being mauled by a pit bull would qualify as such an occasion.

Sometimes, sadly, it’s time to call Sgt. Prestone.

I totally agree with you. Going anyplace such as New York without firearm protection is inviting nothing but trouble. You are a braver man than I, though, to risk being caught and prosecuted by the LEOs there. I would never do it.

I think that that might be a felony. The consequences of that on my record would mean not being able to own or buy firearms. That’s something I would not want to happen to me.

Luckily, I have no desire to see New York City again. I was last there in 1976 or thereabouts.

What is a good defense? Pepper spray? A bat? We do have pit owners in my neighborhood. I can’t just “disappear” them. But I am terrified when I walk by them even in a fenced yard, with or without my dog.

Disappear them. I swear to you it is, tragically, the right thing to do.
