Pregnant women exposed to high levels of air pollution are up to twice as likely to have a child with autism as women who lived in areas with low pollution, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH).
Researchers looked at data going back to 1989 about 325 women who had a child with autism and 22,000 women who had a child without the disorder, then correlated that with pollutant levels at the time and place of birth and how much exposure the women would have had.
In areas where diesel particulates or mercury in the air were highest, women had double the risk compared to those where the pollutants were lowest.
The study also found a 50% elevated risk where other types of pollution was highest -- lead, manganese, methylene chloride and combined metal exposure - versus areas where they were lowest.
The findings appeared online Tuesday in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

My wife - who is a moderate teacher - and has cert’s in this field...has seen studies where the Mothers that give birth to children with autism did NOT treat a fever during pregnancy. Those that did, the children born were unaffected. Seems highly plausible - especially that boys have a greater risk of developing autism than compared to girls - where the X/Y chromo has a higher potential to be affected by those elevated body temps during a fever...something to think about if you are pregnant...
Abortion is a bigger risk for babies, I think.
Air polution in Los Angeles in the 40s and 50s was 500 times worse than today and there wasn’t very many autistic kids!

Thank you. My parents and their siblings were born in the '30s in NYC and all their kids were born in the mid 50s to early 60s in NYC - and not an autistic kid in the bunch.
Oh - and the moms smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol and none of the kids were born premature or had any other medical issues. We also all grew up without any major allergies or other medical problems, played in the streets, got dirty, drank from hoses and played in the water from fire hydrants.
Sooo every baby born in China is severely autistic. Most polluted area of the world.
Not only Beijing, but New Dehli and Cairo should produce generations of autistic children. They are the worst.
