MCGREGOR, Minn. (KMSP) -

A woman was attacked by a 190 lb. black bear in northern Minnesota on Monday night after her dog chased after its yearling cubs.

According to the Minnesota DNR, the 72-year-old McGregor, Minn., woman was bitten and clawed, but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The incident began when the woman let her golden retriever outside after checking to make sure the bears, which had been seen on the property for several days, weren't around. After letting the dog out, three young bears unexpectedly ran out from under the deck and the dog to chase dafter them.

By the time the woman reached the bottom of her deck stairs, the mother bear appeared.

"Obviously, she was shocked and surprised when she got down to the bottom of the deck and the sow bear was there," said Maj. Phil Meier, with the DNR.

The sow initially went after the dog, but turned her attention to the woman after she yelled for her dog to return.

"This bear did act aggressively," Meier said. "It not only knocked the woman down one time, it retreated a little bit and came back and bit her again."

The bear clawed at the woman's left arm and side during the first lunge. When it attacked a second time, it bit her on the right arm and leg. The woman was able to get to the phone and call 911 around 7 p.m.

Although she was hospitalized with numerous puncture wounds to her arms and legs, the woman is now recovering at home and said she is thankful to be alive.

BEAR SHOT BY OFFICER

An Aitkin County deputy couldn't find the bears near the property, but a DNR officer later found them about 200 yards away from the home.

Sounds like a very aggressive bear that charged the officer. Nothing like a euphemistic "ran toward the officer".

It certainly was not afraid of humans, or it would have been miles away from the house.

Bears will aggressively guard their toilet paper.

“It’s not altogether uncommon for dogs to set us up by harassing a bear and then leaving the scene and the bears then come after the human, which is way easier to catch,” she said.
___________

Didn’t I see this exact quote in another bear attack article earlier today?

This is why a person should only let coonhounds outside if bears are known to be around. At least then they’ll just tree the thing, and you don’t worry about being attacked. They’ll also protect you from the stuff as well.

semi-joking aside, this lady sure is lucky. If she knew about bears on the property, she should of been taking proper precautions (ie winchester defender).

Some electric fence tape and a superzap 3000 charger would do the trick a lot better.

Mama Bear + Threatened Cubs = Big Trouble.
This is normal behavior for bears.

Lucky for the officer it wasn’t a dog or he’d be crucified.

Never get between a mother bear and her cubs.

I’ve told my kids that there’s no more dangerous bear to see than a baby bear.

Exactly. Once I saw a cub and immediately jumped in the pick up. The mother ran by about a second after I closed the door.

Golden retrievers are wired to chase after whatever runs, drops or is thrown. Darn smart dogs for most tasks and pleasant company, but not so bright with this type of thing.

My brother has three of them. He's seriously thinking about getting a pitching machine because he and his little boy, 4, sometimes can't keep up with them.

Yeah, you give a bear Super Soft instead of Super Strong, and those claws go through the paper, she’s coming after you.

In Northern Wisconsin the bears are invading human territory. There were very few bears in the area only forty-five years ago, when I was growing up. Bears are invading human territory, and their population is rapidly expanding.

Now, you could say that there were no humans in the area 15,000 years ago, and you would be pretty much right. Of course, there were no bears either, as the area was covered by glaciers.

Speaking of throwing balls for dogs, my half-lab nearly ruined my arm. I literally bought an elbow guard/brace, to try to reduce the strain.

Then my sister gave me a ‘ball chucker’. Made all the difference in the world. I have a huge yard, yet despite my best efforts I’ve chucked the ball over the six-ft fence several times. When it lands it the yard [1.33 acres), it gives my dog a total workout. Chuckers aren’t that expensive, & I don’t know what I’d do w’out one.

"A woman was attacked by a 190 lb. black bear in northern Minnesota on Monday night after her dog chased after its yearling cubs."

190 pounds? That seems like an awful small black bear for a full grown mama bear. They are usually at least around 300 pounds up to 700 + pounds. On a side note, here in Pennsylvania, we have been having a growth of our bear population in the past 10 + years. Bear season used to only be one day, it is now three days and hunters are harvesting a lot of bears. No, I have not gotten one yet. Maybe this year will be my year.

Great idea! I'll pass it on to him. I see that for $1.59 added they will ship straight from the factory in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has some of the lowest postage rates in the world. When I lived in Japan, there were a lot of direct mail advertisers who printed and shipped from Hong Kong.
