'Devious Maids,' the new television series produced by actress Eva Longoria that tells the story of five Latino housekeepers, is being criticized for portraying Hispanics in demeaning and stereotypical roles. The maids, who on the upcoming Lifetime show face scorn and condescension from their wealthy Beverly Hills employers, have been accused of 'degrading' Latino women.
Damarys Ocana, executive editor of Latina magazine told ABC News: 'There probably wasn't a Latina in the country who didn't initially roll her eyes of "oh great, here we go again. Another Latina character that's a maid."'
Eric Deggans, a media critic for Tampa Bay Times, commented: 'Lifetime's Devious Maids raises a pointed question: Where is line between exploding a stereotype and exploiting it?'
And the user GeekChicStar added: 'Am I the only Latina who thinks "Devious Maids" is degrading?'
But Ms Longoria has defended the show, which she produced with Desperate housewives creator, Marc Cherry.
'Where is line between exploding a stereotype and exploiting it?' 'When we get any sort of backlash, sort of "they are playing the stereotypical maids," my immediate response is that "so you're telling me those stories aren't worth telling?" the 38-year-old actress said in an online video promoting the show. Ana Ortiz, one of the show's stars, admits she was at first turned off by the show, but after studying it, she changed her mind.
'To be honest, I had the same reaction,' the actress, whose grandmother was a maid, told US Weekly. 'When I first saw the script, I was like, "Really?"
She added: 'The more that we talk about it, the more people are aware of it, the better.'

Meanwhile there’s a provision in the new Amnesty bill for 20k visas for low skill, low education workers specifically for the hospitality industry. Law imitating art imitating reality?
Rush said its a payoff to the SEIU Unions in Nevada.
“produced by actress Eva Longoria”
That’s enough for me to just say no to Devious Maids.
The jokes about Latino chicks and Sharpie pens are accurate.
The irony is her family owns land in Texas, a fair amount of land. It was granted to the family over 200 years ago by the King of Spain.
Not too many maids in her family tree...
King of Spain! I’ll always be King of Spain.
That’s a pretty impressive display of “No Hotlinking Allowed.” Must be some serious boobs there.
