Word For The Day, Friday, June 28, 2013 – asyndeton
dictionaries ad nauseam | 28 June 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

asyndeton \uh-SIN-di-ton\ noun
1. Rhetoric. the omission of conjunctions, as in “He has provided the poor with jobs, with opportunity, with self-respect.”
2. Library Science. the omission of cross references, especially from a catalog.

Example sentences:
So how could Eddy, who could not sort his own, have made anything at all of the jumble of mixed motives and crossed purposes, ordinary and routine as heavy traffic, or seen design in their snarl of wills, feelings, and intentions, asynchronous and asyndeton as timber soaking in a logjam?
-- Stanley Elkin, The Magic Kingdom, 1985

The most brilliant general would be laughed at—albeit behind his back—if he couldn't report his accomplishments using chiasmus and litotes, praeteritio and asyndeton and a thousand other absurdities.
-- David Drake, Out of the Waters, 2011

Etymology:
Asyndeton came to English in the late-1500s from the Greek roots a- + syndetos literally meaning "not bound together.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

That could also apply to Monica’s undergarments.

“Bad Obsession” and “Don’t Damn Me” are two of my favorites. Both from Use Your Illusion I.

But you can’t beat just jamming Appetite while cruising in the car.

Little known is that it was Julius Caesar’s Greek advisor Syndeton who recommended changing the famous phrase from the original- “Veni et Vidi et Vici”

There is a cicada loose in the house-I’ve no idea how it got in, but it is providing the dog and all three cats with a good deal of amusement and exercise before one of them dispatches it...

The asyndeton and wordiness
From the emperor these days
Suggests he is floundering
In quite a number of ways-

There’s no time for hackers
He claims broke every rule
As Putin laughs and taunts him
And he looks just like a fool

Snowden isn’t stupid anyway-
The risk that he took is real
But Holder wants him in jail
And Putin has a better deal

We shouldn’t be surprised
At the laughing at the nation-
Instead of doing his job
The emperor goes on vacation

I like G&R-it is good driving music-I heard something I hadn’t heard in years this morning-a really weird song called “White Bird”. That classic rock station must have a new stoner DJ...

I was watching VH-1 in the hotel fitness center and they said Geffen had to beg MTV to play Welcome to the Jungle. They played it overnight and the band took off after that.

Hey tiger. I was in your state this week. I forgot how the coastal breeze makes the heat bearable. We sat outside in 95 degree weather and it wasn’t bad at all. It is an oven back home.

That is one of my favorite songs by a one hit wonder band-another is “Lunatic Fringe”-Red Ryder.

That White Bird song was slow and ponderous, and the words just wandered with little sense, like something you’d listen to at a party lit by a lava lamp, with air full of patchouli incense and pot smoke-hence my stoner comment.

With all the talk about G&R, I had to go and listen to a favorite-

“I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I had to put her, six feet under,
And I can still hear her complain”

Yes, when we fo to LBI, its like the change in the air, as you cross the bridge melts the heat, and your tensions.
