I’m running Win-7 Pro x64 SP-1, since ‘09 and really like it. My sister just got a new HP Envy laptop with Win-8, and I wanted to reformat, install a clean copy of what I’m using from OEM CDs, but HP tech advised against it. Didn’t give any real reason, other than saying it wouldn’t work on that hardware. Not being a computer guy, I don’t know why.

Most likely HP decided not to write windows 7 code for your hardware. Its easier for them, and one of the main reasons I
used to buy HP exclusively is that they supported their hardware cross platform.
Technology is assumed to always be moving forward, but that clashes with reality. Windows has always had the football, Poor Users name is Charlie Brown. But don't worry, the bugs will all be fixed in windows (current version +1).

They are lying. Just reinstall 7 should work just fine.
