Elaine Silets is a train lover like no other. Not only did she make a career out of building model train displays but her expansive estate is an homage to the locomotive. And over the weekend, Silets did something she does but once per year: she opened up her gardens to the public and something like 6,000 curious train lovers descended on her home. With10 acres of gardens, waterfalls, lakes, trestles, bridges, and replica towns and pastoral scenes, her Glorée & Tryumfant Garden Railway in North Barrington, Illinois, it’s no wonder they call her the Train Lady.

I've always LOVED trains! I used to play with my younger brother when he got his train set out! We sometimes would set the train up as part of our Christmas decor. I'd love to see this one!

I always put up my 6’x9’ HO display with the 8’ tree in the middle.

2 looonnng HO trains, and the Disney monorail going around the whole thing. And 30 lit bldgs, a pond, town, streets, cars, streetlights, train stations, the works. Takes like a week to set up. But worth it. It’s magical.

Wish I knew how to post a picture.....

How does she run the trains year round? I mean what happens when it rains?

The Gomez Adams has left an lasting impact on many youths.

The lose of being able to blow things up as a kid is saddening.

Cool story. There's a pretty cool museum here, with one of the bigger model train displays in the country.

And here's Union Pacific 844 going past that museum.

I wonder how long it will be before some local government stooge/tyrant comes along and makes her take it all down through some interpretation of a zoning law...

After all, this is no longer "the land of the free."

Cool! I used to stop in the Christmas windows that had train sets up & running. Always fascinated with them for some reason. When I was a 2nd grader, my teacher took our class from Kokomo, IN, to Logansport, IN, via the train, where we got an ice cream cone, then got back on the train and went back home! That was a school trip I always remembered...almost 6 decades ago! ;)

Christmas isn’t Christmas without a train around the tree.

I’ve been a model railroader for 40 years. It’s a great hobby. I do what I want, when I want, how I want. I don’t need to meet anyone’s standards or expectations other than my own. I can create when I want. I can destroy when I want. I am god in my basement.
