UPDATED: Universal's 3D animated event pic grosses $4.7 million, compared to $2 million for Disney's big-budget action-adventure.

Universal's Despicable Me 2 left The Lone Ranger in the dust on Tuesday night as both films opened at the North American box office on the eve of the long July 4th holiday stretch.

The 3D animated event pic grossed a stellar $4.7 million from 2,563 theaters, while Disney's big-gamble Western -- headlining Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer -- took in $2 million.

Despicable Me 2 looks fun. Lone Ranger is just another excuse for Johnny Depp to wear eye shadow.

That doesn’t surprise me. Lone Ranger doesn’t look good, and DM2 has something for the whole family to enjoy.

I have grown to loath the CGI movies.
I know some of them are cute and the dialogue can be funny.

The Western is pretty much dead. The Western genre success was predicated among those fans who read westerns as a child (i.e. a literate society) or saw it on early TV.

Amen! I hate that freak and almost every freak character that he ever plays.

After watching the trailer for “Lone Ranger” my thought WTF?
A good story was destroyed by Johny Dep.

>>The Western is pretty much dead.

The western is dead for the same reason that just about every other genre is dead. Hollywood only makes two kinds of movies: ones with plots that imply that something about America (or individualism) is evil, or the “rollercoaster” movies that have no plot and are just 2 hours of special effects, sex, and/or fart jokes. One is boring and irritating. The other is tiring. Very few are worth $35 for tickets and popcorn for the wife and I.

The last, good western IMHO, wa Open Range. The best grad finale shoot out I can remember. Robert Duval was exceptional.

Actually, ALL of the “adult” movie have sex and cussing, and the “child movies have indoctrination and potty humor.

It’s disgusting.

Gru is my all-time favorite movie bad-guy. The original “Depsicable Me” movie is one of the sweetest and most positive stories about adoption I have ever seen. (Another is “Meet The Robinsons.”)

You’re right, Hollywood is decaying.

They have two products: plot-less, head-ache inducing flash-bangs and formulaic pc fantasies to showcase over-rated artistes.

By the way, have you ever seen the original “Wickerman,” 1973? The final scene is truly chilling.
Those were the days.
