San Diego man admits shooting neighbor's pit bull on Facebook

A San Diego man admitted he shot his neighbor's pit bull on Facebook after it bit him Monday night, and an unusual conversation erupted on his page as some people defended the man's right to self-defense and others vilified him for his actions. Read on for reactions and our poll.

"Well, I said if that dog came in my yard and attacked again I’d shoot it," Valencia Park resident Lee Pattison wrote. "So I did."

From his Facebook page, which now appears to have been taken down:

Lyle Van Horn: "You have a law suit on your hands."

Brian Gurule: "Good. Didn't that dog attack yours not to long ago?"

Juan G. Fuentes: "This is bad news Lee.. San Diego is filled with hippies and tree huggers.. Hope you don't get too much heat about it.."

Pattison's response? "Juan I think it's all good. All police say I'm in the right."

So he apparently didn’t have a brush shredder or the disposition to move on to important things without comment.

Always amazes me...Bad dog, bad dog...

WTF was the owner?

Spot a bad dog, I guarantee you have a worse owner.

I’ve met more bad owners than pooches in my 45 years - by a long shot.

IF you are trying to convince me that all breeds of dogs are the same and the only thing that determines their behavior is how they are raised then you are wasting your time.

Pit Bulls (call them whatever doggie PC name you want) are inherently dangerous. Some more than others. But only a fool trusts one. Upbringing can have influence but can not change what that dog is.

You are right about the bad owners. There are a number of things to look for that may indicate a person is not responsible enough to own dogs - like choosing to own a pit bull for example.

The pit bull is just one of a number of breeds of inherently dangerous dogs.

And dangerous breeds should not be running around loose in public.

You are on slippery, politically incorrect ground here.

You see, it is but a small intellectual leap, or pirouette, from stating that there are inherent differences in dog breeds, or subspecies, to saying the same for differing breeds, races, or subspecies of humans.

Sometimes it appears that the only people capable of reporting the unvarnished truth are insurance underwriters. They know about such tricky or socially verboten topics as Pit Bulls ... and driving through Korea-Town. Furthermore, the Pit Bull seems a favored domestic pet amongst chronic Obama Voters, Welfare Recipients, Drug Dealers and Users, those with extensive history of contact with Law Enforcement, etc. Oddly enough, as any insurance underwriter could tell you after the most cursory analysis, this might well be an individual profile of many an "urban" resident.

But we, FReeper, cannot go there. Me? I think the owners of Pit Bulls who commit mayhem should be confined in a small cell with their belovèd pet and that neither should be fed for 90 days. May the more effective protagonist emerge to be immediately euthanized.
