My only close encounter with a very large moving object at sea was when I was about 15. Dad, my brother and I were about 4 miles out of Boston fishing on a 24 ft. boat. We were hauling in a ton of mackerel when off the aft port side there was a huge object rising out of the water. It was no more the 200 yards away. It's nose rose out of the water and it leveled off quickly. It was a United States Navy nuclear submarine. I have no idea of the name but it was much larger than the WWII style fleet sub...which I had been on before.

We all just froze and forgot all about the mackerel.

How big was the sub you caught? lol

We were fishing in Lake Michigan when I was a kid about 10. The boat had 4 down riggers (2 lines each) and some outriggers (a lot of lines) but I don't remember how big it was. It seemed huge to me. We had been quietly trolly for about an hour when a couple of lines hit within a few seconds of each other (FISH ON!). Then something really odd happened. One of the middle down riggers first hit, then the boat jerked, then the downrigger ripped out of the mounts and tumbled overboard into the deep. The captain came from the bridge and started cutting lines and cussing. We didn't catch any fish. And he couldn't (or didn't) explain what had happened. It was kinda scary as I recall. Years later dad said the boat was rotten right there. I've always had my doubts and have wondered but dared never to speculate. What happened is still a mystery to me 30 years later. In my mind, JAWS had moved to Lake Michigan.
