I should have said that an owl can kill a cat but it would more likely be an older cat who can’t hear as well or a kitten without experience.

Just the opposite. I’ve heard coyotes take cats and it’s very loud whereas owls swoop down silently from the night sky, snatch up a cat and carry it off. Frankly, I never really know how many cats I have at any given time. So unless I hear it happen I have no way of knowing when one has been taken. But I do occasionally hear it when it happens.

Owls fly silently so it’s not likely a cat would ever hear one coming.

You’re right. Especially an old cat.

Not around here, they have gotten very brave the last couple of years.

Around here, we have big herd cattle. Even so, calving season is fairly well field close. What will bring the dogs is the discard. Can be a fairly long month, for a variety of reasons. Coyotes aren’t that big of problem. Never seen what you described. Don’t doubt it. Most of the time around the big ranches, they are eating gophers, burrow rabbits and field mice. Which is actually a good deal. What ever idiots, thought that the coyotes would cull the deer in your area, need to be culled. Never saw a pack of “dogs” even try to back down a man. Amazing story!

Aaack, there actually *are* ceiling coons. And to think that I’ve been laughing at my adopted Walker Hound for constantly scanning the cathedral ceiling. Thanks, Sue! I’ll never laugh at you again, sweetpea. Good girl.

Does *Sue* go nuts at dusk when the raccoons start to become active, and then again at daylight, when they come home to roost?

She did when I first took her in, but she’s fat and happy with her indoor realm now, most of the time at least. She’s treed a few in the backyard, but there are too many outdoor dogs in the neighborhood for a very large racoon presence nearby.

Been an interesting thread. Our familys had this ranch for over 100 years and theres always been one standing order to the hands “all yotes get shot”. No cowboys anymore but myself, the pumpers and the hands all carry rifles in our pickups. I don’t know how many they’ve shot but I’ve taken over 200 in the last 5 years. The little striped bandits don’t get a pass either, if we spot a coon it’s gone. Coons will wipe out a quail or a turkey nest every chance it gets. We take our hunting very serious so predator control is a must. The only ones I put no shoot orders on are our bobcats. They do a great job keeping the rodents down plus I just like to see them.
