Intel’s New 4.5W Core “Haswell” Chips Blur the Line Between Laptops and Tablets.

Intel Introduces Ultra-Low-Power Chips Based on High-Performance Micro-Architecture

Intel Corp. on Tuesday announced its first microprocessors that belong to the lineup of ultra-low-power chips it has to offer, yet are based on high-performance Haswell micro-architecture. With power consumption of only around 4.5W, the new Intel Core central processing units will serve various hybrid and 2-in-1 devices.

Less than a year after announcing its intention to deliver Intel Core processors operating at less than 10W and two months after delivering Core processors operating at 6W scenario design power (SDP), Intel has confirmed a new 4th generation Core i-series “Haswell” processor will be available operating at as low as 4.5W SDP, in addition to the 6W ersions. These chips, to be available in the second half of 2013, will allow device manufacturers to produce the first fanless 2-in-1 and tablet designs based on the Intel Core “Haswell” processors that are designed with performance in mind.

By introducing chips with 4.5W SDP, Intel in many ways blurs the line between Atom CPUs designed specifically for low-power operation as well as Core microprocessors developed for high-performance applications. Essentially, with new chips Intel blurs the line between tablets and notebooks when it comes to feature-set and performance.

Intel did not announce other specifications of the forthcoming Intel Core I-series "Haswell" chip with 4.5W scenario design power.

Many of Intel executives believe that the 10” media tablet form-factor will rapidly erode this year in favor of more compact 7” to 8”tablets while larger 10” tablets will be assimilated by notebook-tablet hybrids with convertible displays and detachable screens. Intel has already demonstrated hybrid tablets with detachable keyboards code-named North Cape. Besides, the company plans to make touchscreens compulsory on ultrabooks featuring Core i-series “Haswell” central processing units.

Besides, those laptops will come with facial recognition and voice recognition software, which is supposed to make them more consumer friendly.

Yes and no. Yes, it will be a big seller because it's good technology that people want. No, because that has been factrored into Intel's stock price long ago, and the product is late.

Wouldn’t last an hour on the battery in my $100 7” android tablet.

But they’re moving in the right direction. It will make a great windows pro tablet (10” with a big battery).
