I love big dogs-but the large pure breeds that have been around for a few hundred years without too much interference by breeders seem to live the longest and healthiest. So Huskies, Malamutes, Chow Chows, etc will continue to be my canine companions.

Small dogs are sweet, lovable and cute, but they are like one of my cats-a different type of companion animal.

My very favorite dog is the German Shepherd-a breed less than 100 years old-but their lives are so short, and they have a lot of problems from overly selective breeding for show.

By small dog, I’m talking about cocker spaniel or beagle size. I guess I should have said smaller, or medium sized. No more labs or chows for me.
