The former girlfriend of a death-row inmate has reinforced the image of the country’s prison system as corrupt by reporting to an online media outlet about how she was able to enjoy drugs and sex three times a week with her inmate boyfriend.
The tale told by drug convict Freddy Budiman’s model girlfriend, Vanny Rossyane, 22, is just the latest in a series of ironic and bizarre accounts of liberty behind bars in Indonesia.
Freddy, 37, was sentenced to death by the West Jakarta municipal court on July 15 after he was found guilty of organizing an attempt to smuggle 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China while in prison.
The woman said that her former boyfriend remained free to run his drug business from behind bars and used five cell phones simultaneously in order to make it work.
But the lock-up facility’s humiliation doesn’t end there as the Jakarta Police have just revealed that another drug lord on “death row” — Jerry Wong, also known as E Wee Hokz — has been running a drug ring worth Rp 22 billion ($2.1 million) from inside the prison. Jerry, a Malaysian national who was sentenced to death last year for distributing 350 kilograms of narcotics, is known to have had operations reaching Iran, Malaysia and Indonesia.
“The death-row inmate has repeatedly engaged in [the drug business from jail]. This is the umpteenth time [he’s been apprehended for the activities] while in jail. When we searched him, he had five mobile phones in his cell,” Jakarta Police deputy chief Brig. Gen Sudjarno was quoted as saying by Metrotvnews.com in Jakarta on Monday.
