Chaka Khan has joined fellow performers in the boycott of Florida, as a show of solidarity against the not guilty verdict handed down to George Zimmerman earlier in the month.
Khan recorded a song in honor of Trayvon Martin, who was gunned down by Zimmerman last February. In a Huffington Post interview, the legendary songstress revealed that she, like Stevie Wonder, is shunning the Sunshine State. "I am boycotting Florida," she said. "I had a booking there last week and I canceled it."
However, if a gig in the state involves paying homage to Martin, she won't turn her back on the slain teen. "If any tributes come up I'll do it. Absolutely."
Zimmerman's acquittal of second-degree murder was "a travesty" according to Khan, and more proof that "racism is still very much alive and well" in America. "It has gone to more of a cerebral state. But it's alive and well. The new slavery is keeping Black men in jail."
A native of Chicago, the "Through the Fire" singer went on to address gun violence in the Windy City. Last year, the Chi surpassed 500 homicides and clocked more than 40 in the first month of 2013 for a record-breaking 31 days of bloodshed. "It's insane," Khan continued. "These kids are using gangs as a rite of passage. If we were still living in villages it would be very different."
She also publicized an anti-violence rally to be helmed by the Rev. Jesse Jackson in Chicago this weekend.
In between career commitments (her new album, The iKhan Project, will be out sometime this year), Khan likes to make time for activism and believes others should follow suit. "Everyone should be of service in some way. There's a reason for being here. We're here fundamentally on this planet right now to be of assistance to one another."
In before I thought she was dead!
I think all of the trayvonites should boycott, and/or move out of, Florida. I know a lot of folks down there and NOT ONE of the has expressed any remorse about Chaka Kan, Stevie Wonder or any other race agitators boycotting the state.
It’s amazing that these “celebs” see themselves as important ant, or sought after so much, that their threats will hurt the state.
Khan continued. “These kids are using gangs as a rite of passage. If we were still living in villages it would be very different.”
Dear Chakra,
the problem is that these kids still think they are
tribal members IN a village.
Let all of these rats come out of the woodwork and form their solidarity with the gangsta wannabes who try and get a little Whitey Smackdown whenever they think they can. It just helps draw the lines more distinctly.
Trayvon Martin was a punk teenager who thought he could simply beat up and probably kill what he thought was a white guy who he felt was looking at him worng.
He found out differently. He found out what many criminals have learned when they discovered what the term, "the great equalizer," really means as their life's blood soaks into the dirt.
If these people want to ally with and stand on that side of the line...fine. Their choice. Sooner or later, if they persist in it, it will end up having ramifications and consequences that they, in their finery and liberal/leftist/prgressive fantasy land, cannot possibly count on.
You know how it is, load up a hamper with some kale
and mineral water, and hit the road listening to
the ALL Chrakra station on the satellite radio...
Oh the weeping and gnashing of teeth over this dreadful news!
NOT!
This morning my wife asked if I want to meet Madonna.
I told her she better be talking about the mother of Christ.

For all the excuses I've seen for black-on-black violence, this is the first time I've seen the existence of cities cited.
This, of course, would explain why there is so little violence in rural African and rural Caribbean areas.
dead? I thought it was a guy.
I’m sure Indian casinos all over Florida mourn the loss of being able to book her act.
“Chaka Full-O-Nuts”
Mine too, which is totally, completely 0000.
I loved her on “Land of the Lost” .
To offset their boycott I already reserved my hotel rooms for next summer’s vacation to Florida.
“Chaka Khan Boycotts Florida Over Zimmerman Verdict”
This will no doubt have far ranging effects (considering that most people don’t know what a “Chaka Khan” is).
It’s always thrilling when these forgotten, foreign affiliated has-beens emerge from the past to instruct us lowly Americans in political matters.
“I am boycotting Florida,” she said. “I had a booking there last week and I canceled it.”
I’m sure the grand opening of Bob’s Mini-Golf and Feed Store just won’t be the same without her.
