Word For The Day, Thursday, August 1, 2013 – lenitive
dictionaries ad nauseam | 1 August 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

lenitive \LEN-uh-tiv\ adjective
alleviating pain or harshness : soothing

Example sentences:
Peppermint, chamomile, and ginger are all reputed to have a lenitive effect on the digestive system.

"They sing of thunder and driving rain, upon occasion, but thelenitive electro pop of Canadian boy-girl duo Purity Ring is decidedly more calming."
— From an announcement by Jason Bracelin in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, April 7, 2013

Etymology:
"Lenitive" first appeared in English in the 15th century. It derived from the Latin verb "lenire" ("to soften or soothe"), which was itself formed from the adjective "lenis," meaning "soft" or "mild." "Lenire" also gave us the adjective "lenient," which usually means "tolerant" or "indulgent" today but in its original sense carried the meaning of "relieving pain or stress." Often found in medical contexts, "lenitive" can also be a noun referring to a treatment (such as a salve) with soothing or healing properties.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Sounds as if you have more than you can say grace over-how about a knee brace from the drug department of the supermarket, in addition to the hot pack? I wear them when I type a lot for work-I wish I’d started doing that 20 years ago...

What does typing have to do with your knees?

I have them for my knees. Was just looking at them. If I don’t bend the knee on the stairs, then it hurts less. I didn’t put them on because I have myself trained to do that. Makes stairs so much slower, but it helps reduce the pain level. Then, for no reason at all, the pain fades away for hours at a time...only to come back, though. I think cleaning on my knees and crawling around did some damage. I have arthritis, but this is something more.

I forgot to say “braces on my wrists when I type a lot”-but can’t you read our minds...

Thanks. That is the intent, but I have to clean it out first. I’ll never rent. Too manypeople don’t pay and they wreck the place.

Sounds like a muscle strain-crawling around probably did it, and that stuff is so easy to do-I twisted my neck while measuring a ceiling the other day and was only able to turn my head slowly for 2 days. I’m usually very conscious of mine and my co-workers’ body mechanics, and I scold them-but all it takes is a minute to be careless...

I haven’t heard the term jewish lightening in years-my first husband was an engineer, and whenever he did an inspection for a repair or re-build of a commercial project after an obvious arson, he would say that.

Have you had them x-rayed? That’s the only way you will ever know what’s wrong with your knees. I could take all kinds of palliative measures when I knew that I still had a cushion of cartilege in there. Once the Xrays showed that it was all gone, then there was no recourse except full knee replacement. I know that I’ve been whining and complaining, lo these many months; but it’s really not that bad.

I take NOTHING for it now — just ice at bed time. I can move around pretty well. The only thing that still bothers me is getting up from a cushy chair, and that’s just for a moment. I’m only 4 months along. People say that it takes at least 6 months before it feels normal, and some say a year. So I’m really doing very well. Not kneeling in church yet, but my pastor understands. He had his done 2 years ago.

As I said, my daughter worked as a claims adjuster right out of college for a while. It was a very depressing job for a nice girl who had never before been exposed to anything like insurance fraud.

She had to be the liaison between people for whom she felt genuinely sorry and the insurance company that assumed that everyone was a crook.

I never assume that the aging body can’t invent new ways to cause pain.

Oy. 6 inches apart, the mix in the paint can, with a 4 inch brush. As you paint the beams, you only need to be near the door.

The reason for using home made napalm is that it sticks.

Once you start the middle of the floor, from the beams, no one will go inside..

P..S. under this administration, those assholes at the NSA probably download the site every few minutes.

So, any rash of suspicious fires in your area wont take long to solve....

Where is the outrage? Don’t get me started. I just got back from HS registration and got my two cents in there as well about this idiotic administration that is taking over our lives. 4.5 hours of saying, wow, have they grown! And connecting with the same group of parents who volunteer every time.

A+ for you. It does kind of undo the fearsome factor if she falls into the sink while trying to look scary. Cats always walk it off with an ‘I-meant-to-do-that’ attitude anyway.

She’s doing ok, thanks for asking. The dog walker is so sweet, she walked chan around the culdesac and then CARRIED her on the rest of the walk so she wouldn’t be left behind while Jules had a longer walk . The humidity crept back up today bc it rained this evening. And we live on a hill which would be too much for chan.

*sigh* I have to go there Wednesday, for Football physicals. They will have been practicing for 6 weeks.. Wouldn’t it make sense to do them at the end of the School year?

Some kid collapses in July practices, the school is going to get sued.
