They have privatized the licensing basically, if you have to go to an accredited driver’s ed school.

That sounds more expensive.

What do poor people do, or do they have subsidies?

i have no idea. the lines for DMV for adminstering drivers tests would be unfathomable. we went at noon on weds. there was not much of a line. the cop informed us almost immediately that their system was down state-wide, had been for 20 min, and could be back up in 10 min or 48 hrs they had no way to know. we figured we would give it a try, basically because i had never been that close to the head of a line at DMV before. We made friends with a couple of guys behind us in the line. one guy was clearly Persian, very americanized, nice looking, well to do etc, but with a slight accent. He was an engineer, but with daughters of driving age etc. So we talked about that. The other guy was a law student at GW! my alma mater, he had an undergrad degree from NYU and had just finished his first year at GW, had done premed first few years of undergrad, then switched bc he figured, as i had, that he wasn’t going to get into med school. So they were fun and made the time pass. But unfortuntely, bc she didn’t have the second form of ID, our short line wait was for naught, since we have to go back. this DMV is the best IMO, bc it’s located in Fair Oaks shopping mall. far less of the unsavory element there.
