Did you even read the article?

Sit at a mall sometime and observe groups of people. Families tend to look alike. Very thin people tend to have certain characteristics. Fat people tend to have certain physical characteristics (beyond their weight, I mean).

When you look at all the different sizes and shapes of people, why is it so difficult to believe that weight is greatly influenced by genetics? I would submit it is because society hates fat people so much, that it is unwilling to entertain anything other than some failure on the part of the obese. I suppose no amount of science will change anyone’s mind.

BTW, I am curious. Have you ever dieted to lose weight or thought you had a weight problem?

My entire family speaks of the “curse,” since the vast majority of us are prone to putting on weight. Though my cousin is a bodybuilder, and my father and I possess “neanderthal strength,” due to our natural builds. (Though we’re not very tall. I’m taller than my father at 5’7.) In the police force he was known as “mad dog,” though I’m so mild I never acquired such a name. Though I do LOOK like a bulldog, or perhaps a friendly gorilla.

Some people are just made to carry weight, and to gain weight, but it can certainly be overcome through proper dieting and exercise.

I respectfully disagree.

I have 8 brothers and sisters. I am the baby. All of my siblings were athletic and very thin as kids and for some into their early twenties. As was I. The people in my family who eat well and exercise (myself, my two marathon running brothers, my sister who has MS) are all not only thin but look 20 years younger than our age with fabulous bodies and skin to march. The rest are obese, gray, and just plain old and look their age and older.

The only difference is our lifestyles. Period.

By the way. I am small framed and 5'6. One of my sisters that is monstrously obese is also small framed and 5'6. If you put us two together I look like a 20 year old super model and she looks like something out of joba the hut.

I love her but girlfriend just kept eating crappy foods and not exercising.

All those siblings will die way before their time.

I'm 6'2" tall, and weighed 345 lbs by my late twenties.

By age 29 I was down to 160 lbs.

In the 30 years since, my weight has gone up and down every year or two, varying between 160 and 180.

I've been 160 lbs for the past two years. Started lifting weights in my 60s, and I hope to gain some weight--but weight from muscle only.

Also quit cigarettes (love tobacco as much as I love food) twenty years ago, and didn't gain an ounce.

i am 5’5, 114lbs... not skinny, but curvy and toned... very small frame... two years ago i was 130 lbs... that might sound like a lot of weight, but on my small frame, it shows... i started exercising, eating clean with occasional cheats, and eating smaller portions... my 4 sisters are roly polys... they eat crap, and do not work out and drink a lot of soda... when they do, from time to time, eat better and exercise, they lose a few pounds... if you are looking at families of parents with their kids, of course they are going to look similar.. they eat the same stuff, have the same habits...

True. Thin people (not all but a majority) tend to eat better foods and exercise more than fat ones. Look at who's jogging and riding bikes in your town. It's not the fat people. Look at what's on the plates of the thins and fats when you go to a restaurant. Look who goes to the all you can eat places.

I will concede there are a minority of people whose body is messed up chemically or their metabolism is off and they can't help it. That's not today's obesity epidemic. It's bad eating and sedentary lifestyles.

And yes, I used to be fat about 13 years and 50 pounds ago, because I had bad eating habits and didn't exercise.
