With TCM's airing of a 24 tribute to the King of Cool last week, the selection for today's feature is the late Christian and Republican actor's docudrama/tribute to the Le Mans car race and the men who compete in it.

"But what is so important about driving faster than anyone else?"

"Lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."

His leading lady, Elga Andersen, had two of the most beautiful blue eyes I’ve ever seen.

Actually a pretty good movie, but when I rented it for my kids they were bored out of their gourds.

I love Porsche. I love Steve McQueen. This has got to be one of the most boring movies that I have never finished.

Good car scenes (loved the Gulf Porsche 917’s), but Steve’s acting was about as interesting as having a conversation about Goethe with an ironing board.

Gulf oil gas stations gave away free promo posters for this movie when it came out.

I had one entire wall of my bedroom plastered with them.

Blue Porsches and red Ferraris scrapping for 24 hours. Two great car companies duking it out. McQueen was great. I’d have given almost anything to wear a suit like his and be a co-driver with him.

It was pretty good, but Grand Prix is the best racing movie ever made.

If you ever saw the movie in a Cinemascope theater with great sound, the opening scene of a bank of tailpipes with engines screaming at high revs was simply enough to get any lover of cars and racing into a bout of ectasy.

It got better from there.

And then you could have watched "The Great Gatsby" at 8:00 PMEDT on the Movie! Channel, complete with Redford, Farrow, Waterston, and Karen Black, who died this week and who received special recognition during the showing. Opulent and haunting -

The encore presentation is on now, ending about 2;20 AM - you'd be in time to catch the jolting end - He had come a long way to that lawn, and he must have thought that his dream could scarcely escape him. He did not know that it was already behind him.....
