Word For The Day, Thursday, August 15, 2013 – anatopism
dictionaries ad nauseam | 15 August 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

anatopism (uh-NAT-uh-piz-ehm) noun
The error of placing something out of its proper place; also something placed erroneously.

Example sentences:
"The Bard is often accused of anatopism -- that is, getting his geography wrong. Why else would he, in The Taming of the Shrew, put a sailmaker in Bergamo, a landlocked city in Italy, ask critics?"
--D. Murali; Shakespeare, 'Literary Equivalent of an Electron'; The Hindu (Chennai, India); Dec 2, 2007.

"Homer may have taken some slight and temporary liberty with the facts, but it does not amount to the major anatopism that some commentators have found in it and should not be taken as evidence that Homer did not have firsthand knowledge of the area."
--John Victor Luce; Celebrating Homer's Landscapes; Yale University Press; 1998.

Etymology:
From Greek ana- (against) + topos (place). Anatopism is to place what anachronism is to time. Earliest documented use: 1812.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I babysat last night so my nephew and his wife could go to a concert for which he won tickets. He brought his guitar and got 10 signatures even though they said no guitar signing. When they found out he was active duty, the rules went out the window.
I played Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, sang along to Taylor Swift, and read Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. I am little girled out!

we have had the most unbelievably beautiful weather for the past few weeks, TOTALLY uncharacteristic of August in DC. Today, as yesterday, it’s going to be upper 70s with no humidity. Our grass and my flowers are all still green and growing, bc it has rained a fair amount too. It was CHILLY, 63, when i left home this AM in a sleeveless dress, and i am actually wearing a fleece i had left in my ofc, today, bc it’s cold in here since it’s not that hot outside. i thought about bringing a suit jacket but didn’t want to go back upstairs for it.

We were in the 40s last night. It was 51 when I drove in this morning.

This has not been a good summer to operate a pool or waterpark.

58 when I headed to the park, 65 when I was done. Perfect weather. It’s supposed to hit 80 but this is ideal weather.

I know the election of Obama should have taught me that there is no bottom, but if Hilary runs and isn’t pilloried by her callous “what difference does it make?” then I will be dumbfounded again.

in a rational, reasonable world, that should be a disqualifier. but we live ‘through the looking glass’ and i have a feeling we will be dumbfounded over and over and over.

She’s also meeting with people to get her in better shape, Bill’s old dietitian and trainer. She’s been a failure in every endeavor. I hope the sheeple aren’t stupid enough to vote for her for anything else.

If I were running against Hilary, this would be my theme song.

I’ve been listening to your favorite channel, Hair Nation, in my car. Might as well see when they shut me off. ;-)
