A Weeki Wachee Springs mermaid was injured Thursday on the waters off Hernando Beach after she fell out of a pontoon boat and landed on the boats propeller.
Samantha Maywell of Brooksville was injured in the leg by the propeller, but two other mermaids with her were not injured, according to John Athanason, public relations manager for the park.
Kevin Carroll, assistant fire chief with Hernando County Fire Rescue, said Maywell was on a pontoon boat in the Gulf when she fell.
She had severe left leg damage from hitting the boat propeller, Carroll said, adding that those aboard the boat helped her back aboard and took her to shore. She had a very critical injury and she was in critical condition, theres no doubt.
According to the incident report, Hernando County Fire Rescue received the emergency call at 4:32 p.m., and at 4:48 p.m. the pontoon boat carrying Maywell arrived at the Hernando Beach boat ramp, indicating they were about 15 minutes off-shore when the incident occurred.
Fire rescue treated Maywell at the boat ramp and transported her to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, Carroll said, and the incident will be investigated by either the Hernando County Sheriffs Office Marine Division or Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Calls made to FWC officers Friday revealed they were not currently investigating Maywells injury and were unaware of the situation.
Hopefully, God willing, shes doing well, Carroll said. Certainly our prayers go up to her and her family that she recovers from this.
Athanason said he has been in contact with Maywells family regarding her condition.
Ive been trying to keep in contact with her mother as much as possible, Athanason said, adding that he was made aware of the situation Thursday night. I know its not life-threatening.
According to Maywells Weeki Wachee Springs profile page, her personal motto is: Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one reached in life, but by the obstacles which he has overcome.
Sounds like she has known suffering before.
I didn’t think mermaids had legs.
Ooh... poor thing... a leg injury like that can certainly be life threatening...
Aye, aye, aye...
Must have been really painful. I wonder what happened, since it implies two other mermaids fell in too.
I remember one of our college cheerleaders became a mermaid there. She was very athletic and also really, really, pretty.
Sorry, didn’t hear a word you said.
If she had been wearing a mermaid costume, she would have been vulnerable with her legs pretty much bound together... difficult to balance...
Good point. And it must be hard to balance.
I pray she doesn’t get a life threatening infection from this. Lots of people pick up the flesh-eating junk in the gulf waters when they have open wounds.
James 1:2 is the applicable Bible verse.
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
I must make a pilgramage hastily and be a good Mench....
Good thing she was in a pontoon boat. Around Hudson and Bayonet Point, It’s tough to get in and out at low tide.
I grew up in that area and my folks ran a shrimp boat out of Hudson FL.
With all the swimmers and fish in close proximity, why don’t they use jet boats instead of propeller boats?
I live a stone’s throw from there.
It’s obvious what kept her afloat.
She innocent of every wrongdoing ever thought to be associated with her. Including not eating her spinach. :^)
Prayers for a swift recovery for Ms. Maywell
