Printer recommendations???

Posted on 08/27/2013 8:10:32 AM PDT by djf

OK I have an HP V40XI and it all a sudden like decided to stop feeding the paper. When it works, this is a great printer, it also has built in scanner, fax, and copier. But over the couple years I've had it, it has been pretty much nothing but a major pain everytime I go to use it.

Picture quality is excellent. But it constantly complains about the color cartridge. And it gives almost NO indication what it doesn't like, just repeatedly saying "remove and check "color cartidge"...

So I think it's time to bite the bullet and get a new printer.

What I would like: Same capabilities, printing, scanning, copying. I can live without fax.

GOOD DIAGNOSTICS AND SUPPORT!

Something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for cartridges. (Yes, I've gone the re-fill route, it can work, but it is not particularly reliable)

Windows XP support

Either USB or standard D25 connection

Most of all, rock solid dependability.

I am sure there are FReepers out there who have had a wide variety with good (Rare!) and BAD, CRAPPOLA printers(much, much too common).

Thanks in advance!

If you print a LOT, I would recommend laser over inkjet as a general principle.

HP. It’s what they do best.

It “mostly” is a print spooler’ issue, which resolves it. Go to your Administrative Tools (or services menu and applications), find Services’, find the Print Spooler option and disable, enable or restart the process under the Print Spooler option.

Funny you should say that, because my back-up printer is a Canon BJC-210 which is printing the stuff I need right now. But it’s a small unit ok for one or two pages, but if I need 2 or 3 hundred pages of a manual or whatever, it’s not the guy for the job.

The RX 595 is several years old and going strong. Ink is pricey. I bought a bw Brother printer and scanner. It does good. I may have printed a dozen pages on it. The Epson has had countless reams fed through.

Two Words:

Laser Printer.

More words: Get a B/W printer - get a color printer. Get what ya like. Just get a laser printer and not one of those cartridge printers. And get a Brother model.

I have always had HP. They are the best IMO. Never had even the slightest trouble with them and I used to print a boatload of docs for my business.

I don’t know if they’ve changed their design, but my gripe with the Canon that I used to own was that the cartridges dried out whether you used them or not. And once the color cartridge(s) dried out, the damn thing would refuse to print using the black cartridge, which is 90% of what I do. Add to that p*ss poor customer service, and I will never buy another Canon product.

Have you ever updated your printer driver? That might help with the ink cartridge issue but not the paper feeding problem. Paper quality could be an issue?

go to hp.com and look up your printer model

If you get another scan/print/copy/fax printer make sure it has a feeder so you can can scan/copy multipe pages at once without having to scan each page on the flatbed one at a time. It doesn’t really cost any more and I don’t understand why every model doesn’t have one but at least half the ones on the market don’t have a feeder.

Looks like I’m the outlier here, but I’ll never buy an HP product again. After an HP printer I rarely used died, and a desktop computer that constantly failed because they intentionally installed faulty motherboards, good riddance to HP. (There was a class action lawsuit against them for the motherboards, but by that point I had disposed of the PC and couldn’t prove I had purchased it).

And get a Brother model.

I've had a Brother B&W laser printer that has been rock solid. I also had a Brother color all-in-one which seemed to drink ink while I was asleep so it wanted new cartridges even when I hadn't printed much recently. I liked it except it (like most other all-in-ones) couldn't scan all the way to the edge of an 8.5"x11" page so I replaced it with a Lexmark that could.

If I were buying again Brother would be at the top of my list except for the 8.25"x10.75" scan problem.
