It depends upon your volume and your color / monochrome requirements.

If like me (and that is an assumption) 95% of your req’ments are black and white and you don’t need outrageous speed and only modest volume, I am absolutely in love with my Brother monochrome laser printer. On sale these things are $50-$75. The cartridges are $22 each on ebay if you buy pairs. They come with a “starter” cartridge only good for maybe 1K pages, the real ones are good for over 2K pages. Stupid cheap, bulletproof printer. If you need color, I have no reco for you, but the notion is that using your cheap mono laser printer for most of your work saves the expensive printer (and carts) for color work.

Mine is an HL-2140, I think the newer ones are HL-2170. Bulletproof. And if it breaks, you cannot service it for the amount a new one costs so that decision is simple. I have had this for four years with zero problems.

Brother mono laser. Unbeatable for simple, straight ahead b/w work.

I find that HP printers are very reliable bu their ink is prohibitively expensive. I had the Kodak printer which has the cheapest ink(not including knock off ink). It did go out of order as I use printers quite a bit but it lasted more than my lexmark printers did I had to have them replaced every year. They lived up to their warranty but after you had 4 of them replaced free they say no more. I now have a Brother which used to have very expensive ink but they got cheaper as I think they copied the Kodak model. I do use knock of ink I get through the mail for 4 bucks and some change. If I had to I would buy a Kodak again. Look for refurbished printers on line and get them cheaper. you might look at Big Lots and find a refurbished Kodak.

Inkjet printers are devices of Satan. They are expensive to feed, and unless you use them constantly, the printer heads dry out and you waste time at each use cleaning the heads and aligning the printer, again.

Get a laser or LED printer. Do you really NEED color printing? It's an expensive way to go; B&W is much cheaper.

I have owned several Okidata printers at home and ordered them for use at work. They are workhorses; the price is right, they are easy to clear if paper jams, and they have a relatively small footprint. They generate pages of high quality with a fast warmup and high printing speed. I highly recommend them. The toner cartridges are relatively cheap compared to other manufacturers.

Lol!!!

Funny thing is, I’m using my printer to print the manual for a 75 year old foot powered Singer sewing machine!
(which DOES NOT require any expensive cartridges!!)

;-)

A couple of months a ago we had my wife’s Great-Grandmother’s pedal singer shipped here for big bucks but it’s worth it. Wife made our kids clothes when they were little on it.

I had the same problem with the Canon printer I had. Loved the compact design for the house though. I learned the hard way with that printer to run at least a small color print or test print once a week to keep the jets working properly. Believe it or not, it works.

I hear ya on that one! The latest thing HP has done is to configure their print driver software (and it updates constantly) to no longer allow the use of off brand (think Cartridge World) toner and the cartridges never get anywhere near the number of copies it says it does.
Oh and if an HP printer is under warranty, they’ll replace it...with a refurbished one!
Once this HP printer goes...it’s the last time I’ll ever purchase from them.

Do a bit of research on HPs current business model before purchasing from them again. Check tech boards to see how they’ve changed their printers and software updates to no longer allow the use of off brand toner or ink and thus requiring the consumer to buy their over priced toner and inks.
I had a Brother laser jet that worked awesome for years but needed an upgrade for all the things you mentioned and went with HP. If I had to repurchase, I’d pay a bit more upfront for the top end Brother laser printer. Good luck

Rule of thumb: less expensive printer means more expensive ink; more expensive printer means cheaper ink and possibly rechargeable cartridges.

The printer should reflect your printing needs, as to balance between black and color; how many prints can be low quality vs. high quality (that is copy paper vs. photo paper.) Monthly volume of copies matters, as does copy speed and copier cleaning, services and repairs.

This latter really matters, because some printer companies make several new models a year, and parts may not be available as soon as three years later, right when you begin to need them.

So far my little Canon has printed 40+ pages, and not whined, or bitched, or moaned in the least.

This is the second time the HP gave me grief and I went to my backup Canon.
The HP may be headed to the dump, but I’m hanging on to that little guy!

I used this HP Troubleshooting Guide to fix my 2006 DeskJet D1660 Printer glitches; uninstall, reinstall, add HP Support Software, update drivers and the $95 color printer’s been flawless for 8yrs.

I’ve had an HP Officejet 6500 for a couple of years. It has its quirks...it will occasionally have a temper tantrum...but nothing major (by my definition of the word,at least).Print quality is outstanding, picture quality very good.Wireless,fax,scanner...it ain’t perfect but it’s quite good.

Check out some of the color laser printers. They are not that expensive anymore.

Check some of the review sites: PCMag, etc., to get an idea of costs.
