Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 28, 2013-- oversight

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

oversight [oh-ver-sahyt]

hear it pronounced

noun

1. an omission or error due to carelessness: My bank statement is full of oversights.
2. unintentional failure to notice or consider; lack of proper attention: Owing to my oversight, the letter was sent unsigned.
3. supervision; watchful care: a person responsible for the oversight of the organization.

Although this is an everyday word, it is one which has essentially two opposite meanings. Definition #3 indicates responsibility and watchfulness, whereas the first two definitions imply carelessness, lack of attention.
The word came up in the Wall Street Journal’s Saturday crossword puzzle, and I thought that the lack of consistency between definitions would be interesting to share.

Origin: 14th century., "supervision," from over + sight. Meaning "omission of notice, fact of passing over without seeing" attested from late 15c.; cf. oversee.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Congressional oversight committees, charged with monitoring the activities of the Executive Branch, apparently believe that their mission involves overlooking vital facts (first two definitions) rather than exercising watchful care (3rd definition).

I finally found my baby pictures while cleaning out my mother’s house. Was it an oversight that Mom stuck them on a shelf full of shoes? Or, is there a hidden meaning?

Sorry, can't provide an answer. You need to go to either a shrink or a shoe store. Or both.

The Obama Regime is fanatically relentless in its oversight of the lawful activities of the loyal citizens of this Nation, yet fails to acknowledge or act on clear warning signs of the Ft. Hood Massacre, the Massacre at Benghazi, or the Bostan Marathon Bombings. But then, those are probably just oversights on its part.

Excellent!

I sent out a tweet this morning:

If Obama had been judged by the content of his character, rather than the color of his skin, we would have a republican President.

My husband told me once, years ago, that his observation in the Corps was that black guys tend to go for your head in a fight - So I’ve watched over the years and it is true. These girls saying “hit her in the head” just backs that up - and why can’t they ever fight one-on-one? Kids today seem to be incapable of a fair fight - they have to gang up on someone.
