Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 28, 2013-- oversight
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
oversight [oh-ver-sahyt]
noun
1. an omission or error due to carelessness: My bank statement is full of oversights.
2. unintentional failure to notice or consider; lack of proper attention: Owing to my oversight, the letter was sent unsigned.
3. supervision; watchful care: a person responsible for the oversight of the organization.
Although this is an everyday word, it is one which has essentially two opposite meanings. Definition #3 indicates responsibility and watchfulness, whereas the first two definitions imply carelessness, lack of attention.
The word came up in the Wall Street Journals Saturday crossword puzzle, and I thought that the lack of consistency between definitions would be interesting to share.
Origin: 14th century., "supervision," from over + sight. Meaning "omission of notice, fact of passing over without seeing" attested from late 15c.; cf. oversee.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Obama & his minions are Masters of Oversight...
A++
Oversight is the only thing they have mastered, beyond Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals.”
It seems my Jayhawks will not be playing an away football game on this field on Friday.
Were it a grass field, it would be muddy, but still there.
Yikes!!
I guess the lesson is Dont build your stadium below the creek.
what if it’s for Seahorse Water Polo?
Is that some sort of Brony thing? ;-)
Ew. My life was better before I looked up what that meant...
Well, don’t look up “twerking” either.
I jammed my shoulder playing racquetball. I looked in my medicine cabinet for something to put on it, and found an old jar of Tiger Balm. It looked and smelled fine, and I rubbed some on, and it is really working.
Curious, I looked at the jar and discovered that the date on it was 1991. The only side effects I have noticed is that I’ve been wandering around my house mumbling “Read my lips—no new taxes,” and “It wouldn’t be prudent.” I’m okay with that, but I am starting to get a tremendous urge to jump out of an airplane on my next birthday.
You’re not thinking of growing a mullet, are you?
I’ve been busting my ass since 8 AM-now I’m done until I can borrow that carpenter’s helpers again...
If an epidemic of oversight
Is really the thing to blame
For the emperor running amok
And pandering without shame
To racists, foreign terrorists-
Any despot willing to say
How great he is-feed his ego
As he goes his disastrous way
Then his handlers need to change
The way they keep him amused-
A roomful of teleprompters
Isn’t likely to be refused...
I have-with three guys-loaded a trailer with stuff from the barn and garage for the children’s home that is my favorite charity, unloaded it at the drop off, loaded it again with junk for the dump, unloaded it there, then we stacked surplus building materials in the emptied barn.
I need to count that metal framing material, roof material, wood and ceramic tile flooring in the barn-but it is going to have to wait for the cool dawn tomorrow morning-my back is not up to any more today...
Wow! That was a rough day! You got so much done.
A very productive day, indeed-I am so pleased to find there is so much stuff that I can use to do a nest for myself-since I paid for that stuff with my own paycheck nearly a year before this house was started, I stowed away every left-over stud and tile in that barn and garage. MrT5 thought I was nuts not to sell it to the builder I worked for at the time for another project, but something just told me not to do it-I’m sure now it was my guardian angel...
LOL!
A+++
Excellent!
Thank you!
I kind of identify with him.
that is so great that you have a headstart with stuff you have stockpiled@!
