Ten dogs from Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Ind., died Monday while being transported from the training center in Denver, north of Kokomo, to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
Ken Licklider, owner of Vohne Liche Kennels, told the El Paso Times the air conditioning in the vehicle being used to transport the animals experienced mechanical failure. The dogs German shepherds and Belgian Malinois were being taken to the Canine Center El Paso, which is behind Fort Bliss 1st Armored Division headquarters and is a canine training facility used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The center is not run by the Army or Fort Bliss.
Two dogs were treated by veterinarians for dehydration and heat exhaustion, while five others were deemed healthy, the El Paso Times reported.
Fort Bliss houses a canine training center that pairs dogs with customs officers. The animals were owned and transported by Vohne Liche Kennels.
We take dogs to California and all over the world, Licklider told the newspaper. We are very experienced in transporting dogs. This was simply a tragic accident.
Licklider could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Fort Bliss spokesman Maj. Joe Buccino told the El Paso Times, This is pretty horrifying. I think everyone that heard this story is pretty upset by it. Those dogs were essentially in an oven. You dont have to be an animal lover to be sick about this.
Vohne Liche Kennels trains dogs for police departments in Indiana and around the country.
It has worked with organizations in more than 30 states, as well as members of federal organizations such as the Secret Service, U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, according to the Vohne Liche Kennels website.
We are heartsick over this, Licklider said. These are our dogs. Well do everything we can to ensure this doesnt happen again. Were going to look at all our systems. Accidents are accidents and this just sounds like a tragic accident.
You would think so.
I personally would want to stop every so often to take a look at them.
Exactly!
Someone needs to be held accountable for this.
Mass murderer.
And they thought it would be a good idea to transport these dogs to Texas in August because....?
Little known factoid here - airlines will not ship animals during the summer months because they know those cargo holds can experience high temperatures during warm weather and they’d rather not risk a lawsuit so they just won’t ship them.
That should say something about the dangers of transporting animals in hot weather.
They’re supposed to stop and check them. Obviously someone did not.
Okay, right?
Effing idiots.
Here’s the company’s email if you want to ask them
Wonder if he was the one driving the vehicle.
Ah, the infamous “everyone is responsible”; therefore, no one is responsible or accountable ..... wake up, that’s how the government and its contractors work. Except of course, you as the taxpayer, will pay for them. A lawyer will appear and note that the contract passes title to the dogs FOB point of origin. The lawyer will advise that the government owns the dogs and the dead dogs could be sent to the White House to be used as a main course when entertaining Indonesian diplomats, His Arrogance’s relatives, and wealthy Progressive campaign contributors from NJ, NY, CT, MA, etc.
In my dog truck, I have an inexpensive indoor-outdoor thermometer, with the 'outdoor' transmitter in the back. All I have to do is glance at the readout on my dash to check on the temp in the rear of my truck.
And I don't have high-dollar dogs.
Just had my four cats transported by air from Los Angeles to Florida (via Newark). Was real nervous, but they arrived Tuesday seemingly no worse for the wear... phew!!
I had a link to what happened last Friday.
This story is from LAST week. They didn’t die “last Monday” and it’s not an update.

Just posted that. This is old news. Kokomo failed to put the proper date, cite it, or update it to reflect that.
sorry if a double post offends your senses so much.
This was a local paper reporting on a local company.
First time that us locals had heard about it.
No, it doesn’t. It’s just a warning for others that it’s not quite in context. It’s nothing against you.
The local paper should have put a proper date on the article they obviously copied. It’s misleading.
Thanks for the info.
My mistake for assuming this was a recent event since it was front page on our local rag
