Generally, the gas pump has a sign that this is a possibility, just like when you rent a car for a week a two week hold is on the card.

Is this exclusive to prepaid?. I have a debit/credit card and have never dealt with this...to my knowledge.
Ir takes 5 minutes to pump gas and two weeks to rent a car for two weeks.
But remember no purchase occurred. My wife swiped the card and then cancelled the transaction. The nozzle never came off the pump.
