I don't know what I did, but I've got an enlarged screen/icons/desktop .. just like a safemode, but I have a full color card.
I've tried restore, but I am given only 4 options ... today, yesterday and Aug 29 and 30.

Oh hail YEAH I remember her ... little toothless kid.
Well ... there were at least 2 fronts gone.
As an aside ... and back on topic ...
I've lowered my font size to 75% which makes this readable, but the top and bottom task bar? is still huge.
The icons on the desktop are still large and I can't see them all

If you'll hover your mouse pointer over the top edge of your lower taskbar, it should change to the arrow thingy and let you drag it back down to a single row, or however you usually have it.
I'll assume you know that a right click on the desktop should give you options for view/icon size ?
Don't have an xp machine running at the moment, so don't recall the exact choices, but do think it's in that context menu somewhere.

Right click on the desktop and set a higher resolution. Simple fix. Nothing is wrong. Sometimes a game or software will change the resolution setting. Easy.

For all those resolution suggestions ... that was it.
I play games (LOVE hidden object) a lot and it was after closing out of a game session that my icons were enlarged.

Yes, Im logged in with my sister and a moose in the shower wearing tinfoil Well, there's your problem right there, sport. Don't you know the NSA keys in automatically on that configuration??
Unfortunately, they haven't worked out the biggie screen bug yet. Gives 'em away every time.
