I was not insulting him. "Beggars can't be choosers" is an old expression, not a literal statement of what a person is. In ordinary usage it means, "Someone who is at a disadvantage must take what he can get rather than insisting on what he wants." I think that is a statement of fact, not an insult.

Why “must” he? Is he desperate to play in the NFL? Your statements indicate he is.
