Same deal with me... just as an ME. One professor failed all the kids in his class, save 3 (out of 40-50)... I managed to be one of the 3... he was an excellent teacher... I only wish I had him for more courses.
We did not dissect the English language into noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, etc.
You were expected to know it from your HS days.
Instead we read books, did lengthy book reports, wrote essays and just spent a lot of time on the subject of the English language.
Funny thing though, I studied English in a European HS and I did better than most American students did. Got a C in E-101 and a B in E-102 which were better grades than most students with an American HS diploma received. Many had to do English over again, which screwed up your freshman year, because you were not allowed to advance unless you had English under your belt.
Spent more time on English than on my science subjects. Rough, rough, rough.
