A cornered white lion narrowly escapes death... thanks to an electric fence.
The rare-coloured big cat was at the mercy of a pride of five ferocious females when one of them accidentally brushed a high-voltage wire and leaped away in pain.
While the others were distracted the lucky lion grabbed the chance to flee her attackers.
Game ranger and photographer Ken Whyte, 22, watched on as the battle unfolded in the Kruger National Park, South Africa.
He said: "This was an incredible one-of-a-kind experience as the white lion is a rare and treasured animal - with sightings becoming few and far between. "
He added: "This event involves two prides, the Ross and Giraffe prides, which were in a territorial battle.
"The white lion, part of the Giraffe pride, was left behind after the rest of her pride retreated.
"The females of the Ross pride then cornered and attacked her until the fight was abandoned when a shock from the nearby electric fence startled a female.
"To see this rare animal being cornered, submitting and then being attacked was certainly something I will always keep with me and it was a sight that would bring goosebumps to the most seasoned guides.
"Although it was a fast-paced and vicious battle the fact she managed to escape with minor wounds made it all the more amazing."
According to the Global White Lion Protection Trust there are less than 10 white lions surviving in their endemic habitat.
There are many more in captivity in zoos throughout the world but these cannot be reintroduced to the wild.
White lions are not albinos - the colour is caused by a rare colour mutation. They were first documented in 1938 but are thought to have been around for centuries.
Today there is still no national or international law to protect this rare animal, which campaigners say is even more endangered than the rhino.
Now Whites in Africa are coloured?
