A fair question.
The answer is that you can’t find a K31 a a decent price anymore and 7.62x54R is ubiquitous.

True. They seem to be a lot harder to find these days. Russki ammo is cheaper too.

A few other points about the K31 - most now available (Classic, Samco) show varying conditions, but all with cracked stocks. Most of the cracks appear to be caused more by the wood aging than by physical damage - the weak spot is on the right side, just aft of the finger groove. The stock is unsupported to the rear in that area, and thus cracks through to the bolt release cut-out. Easy fix.

Also, regardless of the furniture, the metal condition on these rifles has been uniformly amazing. I keep an eye on the Swiss Rifles message board, and I think that what is available now is pretty much the last large shipment that was available to the importers. Future availability will come from individuals in Switzerland selling K31s to brokers. IOW, if you've ever considered buying one, get it now.
