While I understand the need to track implants, I’m not very keen on the idea that the government is doing this. I’d rather see the requirement on the vendors and the government only take over if the vendors go out of business.

medical devices sold in the U.S. to carry a unique code, identifying its make, manufacture date and lot number.
We'll need to remove that pacemaker Mr. Smith to check the serial number.

I don’t think IDs on implants is anew thing.
I have a bunch of titanium in my shoulder and each piece has a code (batch number, manufacture code).
Unless, this is about something else (which I missed)
