One of the Austin stations had a report that the Pedernales watershed had over 8” during the night and early morning. Hope they are not pulling a fast one on us. We are about 35 miles NW of Austin and have had close to 6” by now.

Thanks for letting people know about the Trucker protests, TIK! I’ve been praying for it, that any media blackout is unsuccessful and that there is a huge response and turnout for it.

I’ll be tilling my garden and planting turnips, leaf lettuce and other fall garden veggies this week. I saved some garlic and onion seeds and have them in pots to see if they come up.

I had several onion stalks that had seed pods on the tall stems. My dad used to just throw them in the dirt and they would come up.

Lots of info there. Thanks for the links. That boot camp sounds interesting. I’ll have to check our extension center and see if they have anything like it.

I know we have a master gardener course, but I didn’t think I could manage the time it would have required, plus they want you to do a lot of volunteer stuff when finished. My volunteer stuff already takes as much time as a full time job-so I thought it best not to do it this year.LOL

What varieties did you receive? Do you have a garden patch, or are you using containers or what?

” I didn’t think I could manage the time it would have required, plus they want you to do a lot of volunteer stuff when finished”

That was an objection that Darlin pointed out. When I was asking about the “Boot Camp” I also asked about the Master Gardener program. Yes, it does require about 60 hours of volunteer work. Darlin reminded me of the several other projects I’m working on, and basically discouraged me from thinking about getting the certification any time soon. So I guess I’ll table that ambition for a time as well.

But the bootcamp doesn’t require the volunteer hours does it?

Those garden boxes are pretty cool, thanks; I can’t find the dimensions, though...

Yep, I get that too sometimes with respect to our more southerly FRiends. However, I fight it with my little indoor patch of produce and sunshine.

I grow a lot indoors in that little 2x6 foot area in front of my patio doors, supplemented by a full spectrum grow light.

Green peppers are the best-self fertile. A leaf of lettuce to put on a sandwhich. A little cherry tomato to go on a salad. Spinach for quiche or salad addition. Lemons for tea or fish. It all helps fight that garden envy.

The winter garden outdoors does pretty well here too under lots of cover till we get a warm day-it’s planted with cold toerant varieties of carrots, lettuce, spinache etc.

Hope you’re not getting flooded.

Yes, I am. It’s been off and on with a nice little rainfall. The neighbor’s yardman was able to get their yard mowed without getting his shirt wet. It’s sprinkling now so I ran out to check the gauge which is showing 1 1/4”.

Last I heard from family in F’burg was this morning with 4”. The current radar is showing the heavier is down at San Antonio and a line NE from there though it could change overnight. We need it but it won’t do much for the lakes.

TEXOKIE ~:" Thanks for letting people know about the Trucker protests,.. "

while I am not one to pass along rumors, I noted that this issue came from two various sources, and thought I would pass along the information.
Sources of the information suggest that it will primarily be the 'independent truckers'; will have to see if the larger union truckers are involved as well.
If union truckers are involved, the effect will be significant !

Most gardeners are already 'preppers' of a sort, and are more aware of what they and their family needs are as well as how to respond to problems.
Also , if they don't know something , they aren't afraid to ask someone with expierience ,
and are willing to risk with new 'to them' varieties!

If you get the chance to participate in that 'Master Gardeners Boot Camp', by all means do so !
CoOperative Extension offices have access to a lot of information: soil testing, reccomended varieties for your area, new varieties , etc.
as well as food processing, canning, home orchards , bug identification, chemical pesticide use, natural methods pesticides, home economics , etc..
Most of that information is never explored by the average home gardener or small scale farmer.
The Master Gardener program was a fantastic learning expierience for me ,some 30 years ago ; even though quite out-dated, I still refer to the material.

I’ve tried the indoor thing we have a 6 foot slider due west but Michigan is not the best state for sunshine. I brought in a young volunteer tomato plant one fall and tried to keep it going. It got long and spindly and gave me one tomato! I do alfalfa sprouts sometimes but that’s about it.

No, as far as I know it doesn’t. It meets 3 times, near end of January and twice in February. A Master Gardener working off volunteer hours told me that it is an overview and is not the Master Gardener program. I know that at this point I could probably use a good overview! I don’t want to make any more mistakes and murder any more good guy species!

I haven’t talked with my county to see if they have anything like that happening any closer to us. The one I learned about at the Fair would require about a 3.5 hour round trip each time to participate. Worth it if we can put it together, but if anything is happening closer, it would be great!

The boxes we saw were about 3ft by 2.5 feet. (Just a round guess) - they looked like large storage boxes you might obtain at Lowes.

greeneyes :" But the bootcamp doesn’t require the volunteer hours does it?"

I think it varies according to the area /State. The Master Gardiner Program I participated in asked for 2-3 hours per week answering gardening questions;
some programs wanted interested people to develeope inner-city (veggie/flower ), or highway gardens.
No harm in phoneing them and asking aobut it !
Speaking from out-dated expierience, I got the equivelent of 3 college level courses in horticulture ,
for volunteering for 4 -6 months (midApril - October).

To: Marcella; All

Marcella—Sorry to hear about your neck problem.
If there is anything we can do to help, let us know, you have our contact info.

I heal up and then you have a hurting, just aint right.

All—Rain just started for us about noon, but we have probably had a couple of inches, not going out to check for a while.

I picked up 12 pots at Lowes the other day to trans-plant the tomato cuttings that we rooted a few weeks back. They have perked up and growing so its that time for more root room. Got some really nice potting soil from the seed store last week along with some composted manure and moldy leaf compost. Gunna mix it in thirds and plant.

My ghost peppers are root bound badly, so I got some larger pots to re-pot them. I hate to disturb their root systems while they are producing, but feel I have no choice. I have a lot of trouble getting enough water in them as it is. I have dried some peppers and ground them in the mortar and pestle for some seriously hot pepper.
