Thanks, TIK!

The trucker thing is definitely not a rumor, as several people I respect are busy spreading the word about it.

Thanks for encouraging me to do the Master Gardener thing. I hope maybe one day I’ll be able to. The lady in OKC said that her county’s program is 13 weeks of full day classes, (bring your own lunch!) then the volunteer program is about 60 hours. After the volunteer program is fulfilled, then you can get your certificate. The cost is $100. She also noted that each county’s program IS DIFFERENT! (But my guess is not different by much!)

The Boot Camp is not nearly as intensive, but I think at the stage I’m at, would be a very helpful boost if we can put it together to get there, or find one closer.

I spoke quite briefly several days ago with a friend of mine I’ve been playing phone tag with for a few months. Got a hold of her, but she was frantic and said she couldn’t talk because her house is flooded. She is in the northern outskirts of San Antonio.

Well, that’s why I have the grow light to use for those cloudy Missouri days, and also to extend the “daylight” hours for 2-3 hours each day.

The new grow lights last a long time, and use less electricity than my other lights, so I just use them and keep the other stuff turned off.

I usually bring in tomatoes that are advertised as patio/container suitable while they still have flowers and green tomatoes on them-so I get a decent return.

The pepper plants were great though. They just bloomed and produced, and bloomed and produced all winter long. I had them in tiny pots, so they weren’t really big, but just right to add to a salad or add to other veggies in a stir fry.

Yeh, I wouldn’t want to travel that much. Gas is too expensive.

Maybe I will try a grow light, I do have an old fixture out in the garage. I am pretty chinsy with electricity use though.

If we flood, Austin is in for a hell of a surprise! We are about 750’ and Lake Travis is about .5 mile to our west. We live on a hilltop that is almost the highest point in the immediate neighborhood. There are higher points, but all runoff runs away from our house. Just looked a bit ago and we’ve had about 5.5 - 6” today.

Correction : Speaking from out-dated expierience, I got the equivelent of 3 college level courses in horticulture , for volunteering for 4 -6 months (midApril - October). I answered the phone inquiries ONE DAY per week , for 2 - 3 hours during that time . I found that I learned as much from the questions being asked by gardeners ,
as I did from the research books available for the phone inquires
as I did from the classes offered by CoOperative Extension . My specialities and area of interest : Container gardening , vegetables, perennial flowers , with some flowering shrubs.

The new high intensity lights are great. I think Marcella got one to use for sprouting her seeds. She may have some info on usage of electricity.

I pitched or lost all the stuff that came with mine. I have used it constantly for 3 winters and springs now.

One of the Austin stations had a report that the Pedernales watershed had over 8” during the night and early morning.

Interesting..when I walked from the field down to the Pedernales yesterday, the River was low, and I couldn't even tell the water was moving. South Grape Creek, which empties in to the Pedernales was pretty pathetic, too.

Hi greeneyes—Two questions
1) What kind of lemons did you have indoors?
2) The full spectrum grow lights, is that the four foot bulbs that have been around a long time or something new? Ours are packed away till near frost date, so I cant run out to see what they are. I know they are either Sylvannia or GE, whatever Lowes sells.

I was distraught to learn that I had been a lady bug murderer.

so you were killing the ladybug Larvae? The ones I have remind me of little alligators..the shape..obviously, the orange and black color is all wrong for a mini micro alligator.

Anyone know about ginger? I planted a root (yes, broken up into pieces) several weeks ago and it’s 12+” tall already. It’s in a pot so can be brought inside when winter hits. But when do I dig it up for use?

I honestly don’t know the type of lemon. I just ordered it from a catalog a long time ago and it was a lemon/lime tree. The limes had thorns, and I didn’t have enough space to avoid them, so I just cut off all the limes, and now I have just the lemons.

The light that I got, is I assume relatively new. It was described as a high intensity T3 full spectrum light, and one bulb puts out as much as two of the prior generation bulbs with more efficiency. I pitched the boxes long ago.

It came as part of a set with the stand and light for about 50 bucks give or take a ten dollar bill.LOL

I am thinking that Marcella got the same thing recently from her description. I only got the small 2 foot model, and she got a bigger one.

I know nothing about ginger other than I use a lot of powdered ginger in almost every thing I cook. I’ll be looking forward to hearing about your experiences.

The north west including Benderville got our first rain since mid May. We got 1/2 inch in 2 hours before it moved inland but many areas got a lot more.

Thanks for that info. I have two meyers lemon trees that are containerized and about 3’ tall. We have a lemon on one, the other had a numbers of little buds that fell off.

I have not heard or saw this type of grow light. I shall look into it. The grow bulbs that we have are not very long lasting. It seems that I replace two every year or two out of the eight that we use. Maybe it is because they really get a workout here, I have them on timers for 16 hours per day.
