An 85-year-old Chesterfield County school bus driver has been charged with failing to yield the right of way after police said he triggered a minor crash Tuesday morning on Courthouse Road.
Ira Cromer Jr. was charged with failing to yield the right of way, police said.
The wreck occurred about 8 a.m. when Cromer, driving a county school bus, pulled out of Central Baptist Church onto Courthouse Road. Police said after Cromer failed to yield the right of way, a car traveling south on Courthouse struck the bus.
The car was partly wedged under the bus. The cars driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to VCU Medical Center.
Cromer wasnt injured and there were no students on the bus.
Chesterfield schools spokesman Shawn Smith said the division has no age restriction for its bus drivers or any employee, as required by federal law.
"Chesterfield County Public Schools does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, age, religion, disability or national origin in employment or in its programs and activities," he said in a statement.

Sorry, but why is an 85 year old driving a school bus?
So he can make a living?
Nowhere in his contract does it stipulate he has to drive it well.
Because he likes to?

What’s funny is that these people would probably suspend a little boy for pointing his finger like a gun , but are too stupid to realize that a 85 year old is not an appropriate person to be driving around school kids. Their excuse for letting someone with diminished reactions and eyesight have the job are ridiculous.
I’m 67 an am aware of my slowly diminishing ability to drive safely and can’t imagine anyone driving a school bus at age 85. Could be just me, but being behind anyone in the older category is a trip down WTH avenue.
I really do think professional driving should be prohibited after a certain age. Sorry about the whole hand/eye coordination thing, but it’s a fact of life we all must deal with.
65? 70? When do they stop airline pilots?
Good question... my 87-year old momma and 89-year old daddy still drive... to places like the supermarket and the bank... for the most part, my siblings and i try to take them on their errands... especially the last couple of years...
it must be just you...I'm 75, golf everyday and drive...I don't feel uncomfortable at all
Good for you.
And what does golf have to do with anything? I Still practice Krav Maga every day, doesn’t make me a good driver. But, at 85 will you still be the competent driver you are today?
No matter our perceived driving abilities at any age, they diminish over time ... law of nature.
the person whom I responded to was 67 and questioning driving....Golf has only to do with the fact that I am still healthy and active...Of course driving skills CAN deteriorate, but need not do so at the same rate in everyone
That be me.
