Felony weapons charge for student who brought fishing supplies to school

The arrests of several students who unwittingly and accidentally violated school weapon policies has some Georgian lawmakers saying “zero tolerance” makes zero sense.

A Cobb County high school senior was charged with the felony of bringing weapons into a school zone after police found fishing knives in a tackle box in his car. Cody Chitwood, a 17-year-old student at Lassiter High School and avid fisherman, turned himself in and was released on $1,000 bond.

If the district attorney decides to prosecute, Chitwood could face two to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

“It’s pretty ridiculous,” said Chitwood in a statement to The Marietta Daily Journal. “I have an attorney and I’m hoping to get the felony dropped so I can still get in the Air Force.”

after police found fishing knives in a tackle box in his car

Why were they searching his car without a warrant or contact his parents first to ask permission to search his car?

the 4th amendment really is DEAD DEAD DEAD!

” The official conducted the search after another student suggested that Williams had been smoking marijuana in his car. “

So the student that “suggested” that now learns a valuable lesson about using the government to harass your personal enemies...

He could become the next Dem President...

Government (public) school is child abuse, no caring parent should allow it.

Seriously?! A fishing knife = a felony? If the student would have said no to the search it might have resulted in a felony charge to the officer for unlawful search and seizure. Kids need to have the law explained to them and know that there are boundaries for public servants and elected officials though it seems as if the DC crowd has self-elevated themselves to god status on earth.

Just what I was thinking. Perhaps signed school forms for parking privileges includes a clause that all vehicles parked on school property may be searched.

the 4th amendment really is DEAD DEAD DEAD!

Those who willingly violate it at my expense could find themselves in much the same state.

Back in the olden days when I was in high school we brought our hunting rifles to school during deer season so we could head straight from class to the deer blind. I remember comparing rifles with teachers and other students in the parking lot at lunch.

For some reason, I felt safer then.

I’ll bet you Lassiter High School has scalpels for dissecting in their biology classrooms.

I’m fast losing sympathy for public school accomplices at every level above age of consent.

Don’t know the political persuasion of this one but for any conservative, imo, public schooling is almost always inexcusable. Shows a disconnect between principles and practice. And, it’s child abuse.

That was another student. Just mentioned as additional info. In this case, it was a random parking lot search, using a dog. What was the real reason to violate his 4th amendment rights I wonder. I'll bet they saw his tackle box, and used that as an excuse to search his car. Ridiculous, and unconstitutional beyond belief.

When I took shop class back in Jr. High, you were expected to show up for class with a pocket knife.

Bantam rooster, oh dat's funneee, perfect! No, we moved out of the shadow of "Mt. Richmore" to the leafy shade of Green Hills. Don't miss the increasingly raucous football tail-gating and off-campus student partying one bit!

I would say, "Because they could". Who in the hell does this kid think he is, A Free American? The lords and masters taught him right quick.

Then again, a lot of times, parking lots of companies, institutions, schools, ect. have a sign or signs that read, "All vehicles subject to search".

At this point in time, the only Constitutional Right guaranteed you is a right to an abortion. .
